Calcium glycerophosphate supplemented to soft drinks reduces bovine enamel erosion

Abstract: ObjectiveThis in vitro study evaluated the effect of calcium glycerophosphate (CaGP) supplemented to soft drinks on bovine enamel erosion. Material and methodsFour pH-cycles were performed, alternating demineralization by the beverage and remineralization in artificial saliva. ResultsMean wear (±SD, µm) was 7.91±1.13, 7.39±1.01, 7.50±0.91 and 5.21±1.08 for Coca-ColaTM without CaGP or containing CaGP at 0.1, 1.0 or 2.0 mM, respectively, while no wear was detected for CaGP at 5.0 and 10.0 mM. “…Soft drink Coca-Cola ® (Jundiaí, São Paulo, Brazil) was selected for this study because in previous studies it presented (1,2) the lowest pH among all soft drinks evaluated. The pH of 4 bottles of Coca-Cola ® (Jundiaí, São Paulo, Brazil) used in the study was measured with the colorimetric tape and the value found for all was pH = 2.0.…”

“…However, with the epidemiological reduction in caries prevalence observed in recent decades, dental elements are kept for a longer period in the oral cavity, making them more susceptible to the development of other types of injuries, such as tooth erosion [2].…”

“…As shown, this could be realised only under an endogenous supply of the ions [34,35,51]. The concentration of the ions in the mixed saliva ought to exceed the concentration in the hydrate layer of enamel in order to provide an efficient process of diffusion from the surface of enamel [1,14].…”

“…These processes prove to be a consequence of the changes in mineral-organic of the plaque fluid and mixed saliva. However, the molecular composition of these substances can be altered due to the intake of special preventive drugs (endogenous prophylaxis) on the basis of calcium phosphates [16,17,20,30,31], in particular, the endogenous prophylactic calcium glycerophosphate [32][33][34][35]. The use of such preventive drugs can achieve optimal concentrations of calcium and phosphate in mixed human saliva, however, possible changes in composition have not been considered.…”
