Ammonium chloride as an alternative source of nitrogen for sugarcane during two consecutive cycles

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the application of ammonium chloride as a nitrogen source for sugarcane (Saccharum sp.) on the development of the crop’s shoot and roots during two consecutive cycles. The experiment was conducted on a Typic Hapludox in the first and second sugarcane ratoons. The treatments consisted of four N doses (50, 100, 150, and 200 kg ha-1) applied as ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), besides a control, without the application of N. The increase in the NH4Cl dose increas… Show more

“…On the other hand, other N fertilizers, such as ammonium chloride, improved the yield of ratoon in sugarcane during the first cycle but decreased the yield in subsequent cycles. As sugarcane is moderately sensitive to soil salinity, the decrease in yield could be attributed to the saline effect caused by the residual Clfrom NH 4 Cl - [82]. Similarly, the application of NH 4 Clhas provoked the accumulation of cadmium in wheat due to the increased Clconcentration in the soil [83].…”

“…The continuous and excessive use of high saline fertilizers, such as KCl, has hampered agricultural systems, mainly due to the Clin their composition (Megda, Mariano, Leite, Megda, & Trivelin, 2019). High saline doses generally used in crops accumulate in the soil, increasing the solution osmotic pressure, impairing the development of plants and living organisms in the soil.…”

“…Amonium klorida mengandung hara nitrogen (25%) dan klorin (65%). Dengan kandungan tersebut, senyawa ini dapat menjadi sumber alternatif pupuk N bagi tanaman (Megda et al 2019;Vieira et al 2010). Unsur ikutannya, yaitu klorin (Cl), dapat ditemukan di lingkungan alami dan mengalami siklus yang cepat di dalam tanah.…”
