Incidence of benign lesions according to tumor size in solid renal masses

Abstract: Objective: The incidence of solid renal masses has increased sharply in recent years due to widespread use of abdominal imaging studies. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the incidence of benign lesions in solid renal masses according to tumor size. Materials and Methods:The authors retrospectively reviewed the records of 305 patients with 328 renal solid masses treated by surgery. Based on a report by one pathologist, the specimen tumor size and the histology of each lesion were tabulated. The freq… Show more

“…The smaller the mass is, the greater the chance that it is benign. [1] In our study, 75% were large lesions and only 25% were small lesions. In a report by Massachusetts General Hospital, 46% masses that were less than 1 cm in diameter were benign as were 22% of those that were 1 to 2.9 cm in diameter and 20% of those that were 3 to 3.9 cm in diameter.…”

“…The commonest benign lesion is a simple cyst with an incidence of 25% to 50% after the age of 50 years. (1) Renal cell carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the kidney comprising 3% of all malignancies found in adults. (2) Majority of solid renal masses in patients presenting with hematuria are primary renal cell carcinoma.…”

Angiomyolipomas are the most common mesenchymal renal neoplasms arising from the cortex or medulla and contain varying amounts of fat, smooth muscles and blood vessels 5 .…”
