Human papillomavirus and penile cancers in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: HPV typing and clinical features

Abstract: Objective: To determine the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA in penile cancers in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Materials and Methods:We studied, prospectively, 80 consecutive cases of patients with penile cancers who underwent surgical treatment at three different Hospitals in Rio de Janeiro between March 1995 and June 2000. Of these patients, 72 were diagnosed with invasive squamous cell carcinoma and 8 patients with verrucous carcinoma. The following parameters were observed: presence or absence of HP… Show more

“…HPV positive tumors show a variable prognostic outcome. In a previous article we reported the analysis of 80 consecutive cases of patients with penile cancers and HPV status was not signifi cantly associated with the presence of re- gional metastases (21). Up to now, P53 status may correlate with survival in T1 disease but further studies are required to establish the link to lymph node spread (22) Therefore, it is still necessary to fi nd biomarkers for early detection of metastases, prognosis and follow-up of this disease (22).…”

“…Only 30% to 60% of patients with HPV infection are correctly identified by these methods (17,21,22). In another study conducted by our group, it was possible using a more sophisticated method to detect HPV DNA in 75% of patients with invasive carcinomas (23).…”

“…These factors are coincident with our results: most patients had an informal job (67%), with income lower than two minimum wages and many were illiterates (50%). Most studied patients had a bad cultural status, with compromised personal hygiene, with high risk sexual behavior (unprotected sexual relations, promiscuity) and exposition to sexually transmitted diseases (HPV) that could be related to PC (13). It is also important to stress the habitus of zoophilia, common in interior regions of the country, increasing the chance of PC occurrence, as related by Zequi et al (14).…”
