Abstract: Benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer are two common urological diseases of the elderly. Scientific community has always looked for a link that could explain the correlation between the two diseases and the role of chronic inflammation in the pathogenesis of BPH and PCa. As shown by the reports of the two diseases relationship with oxidative stress and metabolic syndrome, the use of compounds with antioxidant action could therefore affect both the symptoms and their onset. Polyphenols appear to act … Show more

“…Moreover, human prostate tissue is vulnerable to oxidative DNA damage due to more rapid cell turnover and fewer DNA repair enzymes . Recent studies suggest that oxidative stress and hyperinsulinemia, secondary to insulin resistance, are risk factors for cell proliferation and remodeling in BPH . In this study, subcutaneous injection of testosterone for 28 consecutive days increased the level of malondialdehyde and reduced activity of GSH, SOD, and catalase compared to normal control.…”

“…Thus, the proven anti-inflammatory properties of specific serenoa, pomegranate and pumpkin extracts [37][38][39]42] which are not directly shared by finasteride, come to be all the more relevant. This has been confirmed last month also in an obese mouse model [43] further paving the way to a wider systemic metabolic understanding of the disease [44][45][46][47]. In favour of such integrated phyto-pharmaceutic approach, it is worthwhile reporting that components such as specific pumking seed, red clover isoflavones, serenoa and pomegranate extracts have been shown to have antiandrogenic activity by dosedependently blocking the binding of DHT besides am anti-aromatase and anti-5-α-reductase Type II action [38,[48][49][50][51].…”

“…Таким образом, жирные кислоты в частности и липиды в целом играют важнейшую физиологическую роль в нормальном метаболизме предстательной железы, поэтому нарушения липидного баланса могут приводить к ее различным заболеваниям [37]. В частности, одной из популярных теорий патогенеза доброкачественной гиперплазии предстательной железы (ДГПЖ), наряду с гормональной, становится холестероловая теория, подразумевающая одну из критических ролей локальных липидных нарушений при данном заболевании [38,39].…”
