Amphibians of the state of Piauí, Northeastern Brazil: a preliminary assessment

Abstract: Abstract:The state of Piauí is located between the Caatinga and Cerrado biomes in Northeastern Brazil, having a rich heterogeneity of habitats. However, publications regarding the amphibians of this state are scarce. We compiled literature data and complemented it with amphibian inventories in some municipalities of Piauí and present a list of 55 species (54 anurans and one caecilian). Ten of them are endemic to the Cerrado biome (Rhinella veredas, R. cerradensis, R. mirandaribeiroi, R. rubescens, Dendropsophu… Show more

“…Our results support other studies conducted in Cerrado areas (Brasileiro et al 2008, Oda et al 2009, Roberto et al 2013, Dal Vechio et al 2013, Santoro & Brandão 2014, Dória et al 2015, which affirm that the amphibian communities are dominanted by tolerant and generalist species. However, we recorded also typical species of forested areas, as Osteocephalus taurinus and B. boans, common species in riparian forests of the Cerrado and the Amazon biomes , Jungfer et al 2013, Matavelli et al 2013, Freitas et al 2017.…”

“…ruber, as adopted by other authors (e.g. Valdujo et al 2011, Dal Vechio et al 2013, Roberto et al 2013. Similarly, acoustic differences between species of the genus Elachistocleis are almost undetectable to human ear, which prevented the identification of the species from this genus in the PEM because they were recorded only by their vocalizations and because there is the possibility that occur at least three species in region: E. piauiensis, E. carvalhoi and E. bumbameuboi (Caramaschi 2010).…”

“…Currently, lists of anuran amphibians are only available for the Brazilian states of Alagoas (Almeida et al 2016), Espírito Santo (Almeida et al 2011), Piauí (Roberto et al 2013), Rio de Janeiro (Rocha et al 2004), Rio Grande do Sul (Machado & Maltchik 2007), and São Paulo (Rossa-Feres et al 2011), less than a quarter (23.1%) of the total number of Brazilian states.…”

“…Currently, the species is known to occur in the Brazilian states of Bahia (Mercadal 1986, Zaidan andLeite 2012), Paraíba (Vieira et al 2006a), Rio Grande do Norte (Vieira et al 2006a, Jorge et al 2012, Pernambuco (Santos et al 2009), Piauí (Roberto et al 2013), Minas Gerais (Maciel et al 2013), and Sergipe (Santana et al 2014; Figure 1). Ceratophrys joazeirensis is poorly known because of its ecology, cryptic coloration, relatively rarity in nature, and activity that is limited to the rainy season.…”
