Fishes of Paranaguá Estuarine Complex, South West Atlantic

Abstract: Abstract:The objective of this work was to present an updated checklist of the currently known fishes in the Paranaguá Estuarine Complex (PEC) and provides comments on conservation status for the treated species. We used a large dataset derived from a pool of studies which have been conducted within there along the last 30 years. Each study was based on monthly samplings and conducted in several estuarine habitat; thus, the pool covers practically all estuarine habitats and takes into account the seasonal cycl… Show more

“…Among the species collected at Indio Beach, only five were not recorded in the Paranaguá Estuarine Complex (checklist, Passos et al (2012)): Genidens machadoi, Anchoa marinii, Heteropriacanthus cruentatus, Macrodon atricauda and Odontesthes argentinensis. The distribution of the last species is restricted to the south of Brazil (Froese & Pauly, 2012).…”

“…1). PEC harbors a rich fish fauna of 213 species that represent a mixture between tropical Brazilian coastal fauna and temperate Argentinian and Uruguayan species (PASSOS et al, 2012). This richness is higher than, or comparable to, those of other systems located in species-rich, tropical biogeographical zones around the world, which emphasizes the importance of PEC for global biodiversity conservation (PASSOS et al, 2012).…”

This richness is higher than, or comparable to, those of other systems located in species-rich, tropical biogeographical zones around the world, which emphasizes the importance of PEC for global biodiversity conservation (PASSOS et al, 2012). Despite this conservation status, PEC has suffered from the impact of three ports (Paranaguá, Antonina and Ponta do Félix), dredging, discharge of domestic and industrial effluents, introduction of exotic species (VITULE et al 2006;CAIRES et al, 2007;CONTENTE et al, 2011b), and growing urbanization (LANA et al, 2001).…”

“…There have been several studies on the fish fauna in the Paranaguá Estuarine Complex (Hackradt et al 2009;Félix-Hackradt et al 2010;Ignácio & Spach 2010;Contente et al 2011;Passos et al 2012;Pichler et al 2015Pichler et al , 2017Possatto et al 2017) and in the Guaratuba Bay (Chaves & Corrêa 1998;Chaves & Vendel 2001). On the other hand, few studies have focused on the continental shelf region, especially those assessing the taxonomic composition of the ichthyofauna (Santos 2006;Carniel 2008;Schwarz-Junior 2010).…”
