Lista de Cyanobacteria do Estado de São Paulo

Abstract

Based on the literature about the cyanobacteria from Brazil and particularly from São Paulo State, the list of Brazilian flora and the data bank of herbaria collections, a total of 460 species were referred to Brazil and 378 to São Paulo State. Taking into account that the group of cyanobacteria presents around 2800 species, these numbers represent much less than 20% of the known species. Considering the diversity of environments and habitats in the tropical/subtropical biomes compared to the reduced number of known species, this biodiversity is certainly underestimated and should be much larger.

First record of a cyanobacterium Petalonema alatum (Borzì ex Bornet & Flahault) Correns (Cyanobacteria, Scytonemataceae) in Africa

“…The new record of P. alatum from Africa is an extremely important finding, as it extends its known geographical distribution, particularly in the southern hemisphere and the African continent. Currently P. alatum was only recorded from the northern hemisphere, except for Brazil (Sant'Anna et al 2011) and the small island of New Caledonia east of Australia (Couté et al 1999). The closest distance and direction from previous records are approximately 6,600 km north to Israel (Rayss 1944, Vinogradova et al 2000 and approximately 7,500 km west to São Paulo in Brazil (Sant'Anna et al 2011).…”

Most of the knowledge of Brazilian cyanobacteria was acquired from those of lentic aquatic environments, and the terrestrial, aerophytic, and saline/marine forms have been explored only recently. Thus, this work shows the importance of exploring various environments, because the MAAs were identified from different habitats.…”

Cyanobacteria from a Brazilian subtropical freshwater water body
