Protozooplankton is an important component of the aquatic microbial food webs and its composition, density, and distribution reflect the chemical, physical, and biological aspects of the environment. Considering the scarce literature on freshwater protozoans in Brazil and on protozoan ecology in subtropical environments, we listed the ciliates and amoebae taxa found in 13 water bodies in São Paulo State and analyzed their abundance in relation to the environmental variables. We collected two samples in each environment, fixed immediately with mercuric chloride and stained with bromophenol blue. After microscopical analysis, 74 protozoan genera were identified and the Ciliophora were dominant in the majority of the environments. The Stichotrichia, represented mostly by the genus Halteria, occurred in all environments, and was the dominant subclass in five of them. The canonic correspondence analysis of the most frequent genera and the environmental variables showed that nitrite and nitrate were the variables that better explained the distribution of Limnostrombidium, Urotricha, and Vorticella. The densities of the genera Halteria, Coleps, and of the species Cinetochilum margaritaceum were positively affected by increasing concentrations of dissolved oxygen, particulate phosphate, conductivity, and temperature. C. margaritaceum were also negatively affected by increasing concentrations of nitrite and nitrate. Considering that we made only one sampling in each environment, the richness was high compared to the mean diversity of lakes in the São Paulo State. The Diogo Lake, located in an ecological reserve, was the richest one, confirming the need of more research on the biodiversity of more preserved environments.

ABSTRACT. Checklist of the tecamoeba (Testacea) from Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. This study compiled the information on the occurrence of the testate amoeba (Protozoa: Testacea) in the Mato Grosso do Sul State. It was recorded 19 genera and 138 infrageneric taxa in the state. All these taxa were found in the Upper Paraná River basin, and only six of them were found in the Upper Paraguay River Basin. The taxonomic diversity in the Mato Grosso do Sul state was higher than São Paulo State, and comparable to the diversity recorded in the Central west and North Brazilian regions. Despite this diversity, there are few studies with no testacea and researchers living in the state.

RESUMOEste estudo descreve alterações de variáveis limnológicas (material em suspensão, turbidez, temperatura, oxigênio dissolvido, DBO 5 , pH, carbono orgânico e inorgânico, condutividade, nitrogênio orgânico total, nitrato, nitrito, amônio e fósforo total e dissolvido) do reservatório do Monjolinho e de seus trechos de rio dentro do campus da UFSCar. As coletas de água foram superficiais e realizadas quinzenalmente em três pontos. Observou-se uma variação temporal principalmente devido à precipitação para as variáveis: material em suspensão, turbidez, temperatura, carbono orgânico e inorgânico, concentrações de nitrato, amônio, nitrogênio orgânico total e fósforo total e dissolvido. As variáveis oxigênio dissolvido, pH e nitrito apresentaram diferenças no padrão espacial entre os trechos de rio, enquanto que, para a DBO, foram verificadas diferenças entre o reservatório e o trecho de rio a montante. As análises físicas e químicas mostraram que, nos pontos selecionados, as águas apresentam suas variáveis com valores em conformidade com a legislação, embora o índice de estado trófico aponte o trecho do sistema estudado como eutrófico, de acordo com as concentrações de fósforo total. Além disso, outros estudos mostram uma evidente degradação ambiental em direção a foz, atribuída a interferências antrópicas. ABSTRACT TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL CHANGES OF LIMNOLOGICAL VARIABLES FROM MONJOLINHO RESERVOIR (UFSCAR CAMPUS).This study described changes of limnological variables (suspended material, turbidity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, BOD 5 , pH, organic and inorganic carbon, electrical conductivity, total organic nitrogen, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium and total and dissolved phosphorous) of Monjolinho Reservoir and Monjolinho River, both located inside the UFSCar campus. Water was collected superficially (each two weeks) in three sampling station. We observed a temporal variation, mainly due to the rain, for the variables: suspended material, turbidity, temperature, inorganic and organic carbon, nitrate, ammonium and total organic nitrogen as well as total and dissolved phosphorous. Dissolved oxygen, pH and nitrite showed differences in the spatial pattern between the two studied river sites. The BOD values were different between the upstream river and the reservoir sites. In the sampling sites, water physical and chemical variables showed values in conformity with the legislation, although, based on phosphorus total concentrations, a trophic status index classifies the studied system as eutrophic. Besides, others studies showed an environmental degradation towards the river mouth, due to anthropogenic cause.
