There are few reports on the community composition and diversity pattern of the Cassidinae species of China. Compared to the neighbouring provinces of Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang, the Cassidinae richness in Jiangxi Province is under-reported. Longnan City, a biodiversity hotspot in Jiangxi Province, was chosen to obtain the first overview of the Cassidinae beetles. The sample coverage curves for the three sample sites reached an asymptote which indicated sampling was sufficient for data analysis. A total of eight tribes, 16 genera, 59 species and 1590 individuals of Cassidinae beetles were collected. Most belonged to the tribe Hispini (1121 individuals; 70.5%), followed by the tribe Cassidini (161 individuals; 10.13%) and the tribe Oncocephalini (159 individuals; 10.0%). The remainder (149 individuals) belonged to five tribes (Gonophorini, Basiprionotini, Callispini, Notosacanthini and Aspidimorphini). The tribes Notosacanthini, Aspidimorphini and Oncocephalini were newly recorded for Jiangxi Province. There were 14 families, 27 genera and 39 species of host plants of Cassidinae beetles in Longnan County. Cassidinae larvae mainly feed on the plant families Poaceae, Rosaceae, Lamiaceae and Rubiaceae. Most host-plant associations are new reords for the beetle species. This research, together with our planned future work in China, may help to explain the geographical distribution, diversity patterns and host plant associations of these beetles.

1. The increase of digitally available primary biodiversity data has been a positive result of sharing initiatives in the natural history museum community and among citizen scientists. Owing to the heterogeneity of sources, however, limitations related to data quality control emerge, as incomplete and/ or erroneous information at different stages of input must be overcome. To facilitate detection of spatial errors, species distribution modelling (SDM) has been suggested, but its efficiency in detection of different types of spatial errors has not been assessed.2. We investigate the utility of SDM-based assessments in detection of two types of spatial errors found in large biodiversity databases, random errors versus errors of misidentification as congeneric taxa. We used available distributional data for five closely related species of the tortoise beetle genus Mesomphalia (Coleoptera, Chyrsomelidae, Cassidinae) to test the suitability values associated with simulated erroneous points mimicking the two error types.3. Overall, we observed that habitat suitability values associated with random outliers were lower than those for congeneric outliers, fitting expectations based on the idea of niche conservatism. Also, detecting outliers in small datasets is more challenging, whereas in larger datasets, the detection of random outliers should be more efficient.4. Our results indicate that SDM tools can be useful in detection of outliers more efficiently when erroneous points fall outside the ecological niche profile of the species, as in the case of random typographical errors, but not as effective with errors of misidentification. This paper explores a potential tool to promote better assessment of the quality of biodiversity data.

New records of Tachinidae flies parasitizing Mesomphaliini species (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae) collected in the Neotropical region. We provided the first records of parasitism of Cyrtonota thalassina (Boheman, 1850), Botanochara sp. and Paraselenis flava (Linnaeus, 1758) by species of Eucelatoria Townsend, 1909 (Blondeliini) and parasitism of P. flava by a species of Voria Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 (Voriini). A species of Eucelatoria parasitizing Chelymorpha sp. is recorded for Brazil for the first time. New host plant records are provided: C. thalassina on Ipomoea saopaulista O’Donell and P. flava on I. aristolochiifolia G. Don.
