A new species of Saetherocryptus Andersen et Mendes, 2007 from Brazil (Diptera: Chironomidae, Orthocladiinae)

Abstract: Etymology:The name temimino is the name of an indigenous tribe that used to live in the area where the species was collected. The name is to be treated as a noun in apposition. Diagnostic characters:The species can easily be separated from S. clavatus Andersen et Mendes based on the subtriangular shape of the gonostylus; the curved, pointed megaseta; the length of the costal extension (82 µm against 104-166 µm in S. clavatus); the more triangular dorsomedian projection of the gonocoxite that overreaches the ba… Show more

“…This number has been increasing in recent years thanks to intense taxonomic work being done, particularly in Brazil (e.g. Andersen and Pinho 2014, Andersen et al 2015, Silva et al 2014a,b, Siri and Donato 2015. Regarding Central America and the Caribbean, the chironomid fauna remains poorly known.…”

“…Recent years have seen increased activity regarding chironomid systematics in the Neotropical region (e.g. Oliveira et al 2013, Andersen and Pinho 2014, Silva et al 2014a,b, Andersen et al 2015, Siri et al 2015, Parise and Pinho 2016, Silva and Oliveira 2016, Silva and Ferrington 2018. At the same time, paleolimnological research, i.e.…”

“…While recent years have seen increased activity regarding Chironomidae in the region (e.g. Watson & Heyn 1992;Andersen & Pinho 2014;Andersen et al 2015;Oliveira et al 2013;Silva et al 2014a, b;Siri et al 2015;Trivinho-Strixino et al 2013Parise & Pinho 2016;Silva & Oliveira 2016;Epler 2017;Silva & Ferrington 2018), the knowledge of paleoenvironmental archives preserved in lake sediments particularly in Central America and the Caribbean region, remains fragmentary. Therefore, the present study provides information on the larval sub-fossil chironomid fauna from lake sediments in Central America for the first time.…”
