The effects of Urucu crude oil on growth and biomass production of Echinochloa polystachya were studied experimentally. Young plants contaminated with 5 oil doses (0 to 2.64 l.m -2 ) were monitored at 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20 days after exposure. A significant reduction was observed in leaf humidity and the ratio of live aerial/ total biomass related to the increase in oil dosage. Increased exposition time caused a reduction in the number of leaves, aerial biomass, proportion of live aerial/total biomass, total biomass, and an increase of dead aerial biomass. However, root biomass and leaf length were not affected by exposure to oil. The low tolerance of E. polystachya to Urucu crude oil has lead to the mortality of 90% of the plant population in 20 days at the 2.64 l treatment. The death of young individuals of E. polystachya by relatively low dosages of Urucu oil indicates that, in the case of an oil spill in the Amazon varzea, this species would be severely affected, endangering, consequently, the entire environment. ResumoOs efeitos do petróleo cru de Urucu sobre o crescimento e a produção de biomassa da herbácea aquática amazônica Echinochloa polystachya foram estudados experimentalmente em casa de vegetação. Plantas jovens de E. polystachya foram contaminadas com 5 dosagens de petróleo (0 to 2,64 L.m -2 ) e avaliadas após 1, 5, 10, 15 e 20 dias da exposição. Ao término do experimento foi verificada uma significativa diminuição da proporção de biomassa aérea viva/total, da umidade das folhas e aumento do número de folhas com comprometimento fitossanitário, em resposta ao aumento da dosagem do petróleo. O aumento do tempo de exposição levou à diminuição do número de folhas, biomassa aérea, proporção de biomassa aérea viva/total, biomassa total e um aumento do número de folhas comprometidas e biomassa aérea morta. Contudo, a biomassa de raízes e o comprimento das folhas não foram afetados pela exposição ao petróleo. A baixa tolerância de E. polystachya ao petróleo de Urucu levou à mortalidade de 90% da população de mudas em 20 dias com o tratamento de 2,64 L.m -2 . A perda de indivíduos jovens de E. polystachya em doses relativamente baixas do petróleo de Urucu indica que, no caso de um derramamento de óleo na várzea amazônica, esta espécie seria severamente afetada e, consequentemente, todo o ambiente. In the last decades, petroleum activities have increased in the Brazilian Amazon where there is oil exploration on the Urucu River, a tributary of the Amazon River, about 600 km from the city of Manaus. Particularly, transportation via the Amazon River to reach the oil refinery in Manaus may compromise the integrity of the large floodplains that flank hundreds of kilometers of this major river. In the Amazon floodplains, plant growth and nutrient cycling are related to the flood pulse. When oil spills occur, floating oil on the water surface is dispersed through wind and wave action in the littoral region, thus affecting the vegetation of terrestrial and aquatic environments. If pollutants enter the system, they are absorbed by plants and distributed in the food chain via plant consumption, mortality, and decomposition. The effect of oil on the growth and survival of vegetation in these environments is virtually unknown. The water hyacinth [Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms] has a pantropical distribution but is native to the Amazon, often growing in high-density populations in the floodplains where it plays an important role as shelter and food source for aquatic and terrestrial biota. The species is well known for its high capacity to absorb and tolerate high levels of heavy metal ions. To study the survival and response of water hyacinth under six different oil doses, ranging from 0 to 150 ml l(-1), and five exposure times (1, 5, 10, 15, and 20 days), young individuals distributed in a completely randomized design experiment composed of vessels with a single individual each were followed over a 50-day period (30-day acclimatization, 20 days under oil treatments). Growth parameters, biomass, visual changes in the plants, and pH were recorded at 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20 days. Increasing the time of oil exposure caused a decrease in biomass, ratio of live/dead biomass and length of leaves, and an increase in the number of dead leaves. Dose of oil and time of exposure are the most important factors controlling the effects of petroleum hydrocarbons on E. crassipes. Although the species is able to survive exposure to a moderate dose of oil, below 75 ml l(-1) for only 5 days, severe alterations in plant growth and high mortality were observed. Therefore, we conclude that Urucu oil heavily affects E. crassipes despite its known resistance to many pollutants.

ResumoO potencial de contaminação de solos por vazamentos de óleos vem crescendo, devido à forte industrialização e o desenvolvimento econômico dos países. Diante desse cenário, a biorremediação tem se mostrado uma alternativa para remediar áreas mediante uso de agentes biológicos. Dois microorganismos, isolados de um efluente rico em lipídios, foram utilizadas nos ensaios de bioaumentação em solos contaminados com óleo diesel, óleo lubrificante e óleo de soja. Ensaios de atenuação natural foram realizados como controles. As remoções do óleo diesel no tempo de 21 d foram de 18,5%, 7,30% e 11,38% respectivamente, para as técnicas de bioaumento com os isolados I1 e I2 e atenuação natural. As remoções do óleo lubrificante foram de 41,6%, 14,16% e 6,91% respectivamente, para as técnicas de bioaumento com os isolados I1 e I2 e atenuação natural, enquanto que para o óleo de soja as remoções foram de 87,8%, 73,9% e 49,4%. Considerando-se as técnicas de bioaumento e atenuação natural, o bioaumento com o isolado I1 apresentou melhores resultados, possivelmente devido à produção de compostos com capacidade de diminuição da tensão superficial durante a fase de preparo do bioaumento.
