Abstract: Dissolved carbohydrates and abundant algae of Barra Bonita Reservoir were studied monthly from June 2002 to January 2004 in six depths whose values vary depending on the seasons and the water level at a sampling site located 3 km upstream the Reservoir dam. Nearly 90% of the dissolved carbohydrates were constituted of polymeric hydrolysable carbohydrates (polysaccharides or oligosaccharides). Analysis of variance detected variability among concentrations of dissolved carbohydrates only in temporal scale (p < 0… Show more

“…Constant horizontal water flux promoted by hydroelectrical power generation and the prevailing wind, which blows along the reservoir's longitudinal axis, ensures that the reservoir water column is rarely stratified. The seasons are not very pronounced in terms of temperature variation (20 to 28.4°C in the water at the surface during the present study), but the hottest period (December to February) is very rainy, while the winter (May to July) is the dry season, with little or no rain (Dellamano-Oliveira et al 2007). …”

“…The 4 species discussed in the present study are frequently responsible for > 90% of the biomass produced by phytoplankton in the reservoir (Jati 1998, Calijuri et al 2002, Dellamano-Oliveira et al 2007 and were found throughout the study period, with a clear predominance of Microcystis aeruginosa during both the rainy and dry seasons. Given the ability of these organisms to produce rhamnose-rich EPS, the rather high content of rhamnose in TnDC found in the reservoir is not surprising.…”

“…Since no data was available concerning these enzymes in freshwater aggregates, the low activity of arabinosidase, fucosidase and rhamnosidase in the particles could be related to the process of aggregate construction and persistence. Rhamnose, fucose and arabinose were responsible for 43% of the total polymeric carbohydrates present in Barra Bonita Reservoir and were correlated with phytoplanktonic blooms, dominated by cyanobacteria, which were probably the main source of extracellular polysaccharide in the system (Dellamano-Oliveira et al, 2007). Some characteristics of these three monosaccharides include the elevated capacity of aggregate formation and refractory traits.…”

“…11 BB reservoir is a system characterized as polymictic and hypereutrophic to eutrophic with a high content of nutrients, whose contribution leads to the development of blooms of cyanobacteria during the summer and Bacillariophyceae during the winter. 12 The Piracicaba and Tietê Rivers carry organic and inorganic waste from agricultural, urban, and industrial activities affecting the water quality. Ibi is characterized as polymictic, turbulent, and eutrophic reservoir; however, the trophic state can be affected by rainy and dry seasons depicting intense eutrophication process in the rainy season.…”
