Abstract: There are seven species of sea turtles around the world. Among these, five visit the northeast coast of Brazil to reproduce and feed. These sea turtles are impacted by human activity and need conservation measures. The seismic survey is one of these activities due to its high intensity and low frequency sound emissions in the marine environment. Records of sea turtles during seismic surveys in shallow waters of the northeast of Brazil between 2002 and 2003 are presented in this study with some discussion about… Show more

“…One method that has been used to minimize potential misidentification across taxa (e.g., Petitgas et al 2003, Parente et al 2006, Conn et al 2013 is to identify individuals to the lowest taxonomic unit for which positive identification is certain (hereafter, ''partial identification'') instead of to the species level (Buckland et al 2001). However, this can result in a large proportion of partially identified individuals, lowering the precision of species abundance estimates, hindering clear interpretation of species-specific trends, and complicating comparisons of results across space and time.…”

“…El presente estudio brinda información novedosa acerca del efecto de actividades de exploración sísmica en aves marinas en el Mar Argentino. A pesar de los escasos estudios centrados en la descripción de los posibles impactos sobre los recursos hidrobiológicos de las actividades de prospección sísmica (Engel et al 2004, Boeger et al 2006, Parente et al 2006, Rubio et al 2015, no ha tenido lugar en nuestro país una evaluación integral del efecto de dicha actividad sobre las aves marinas.…”

“…The Praia do Forte (northern Bahia State) is considered by TAMAR Project the core nesting area for marine turtle reproduction in the northeastern Brazil (Marcovaldi & Marcovaldi, 1999). Nevertheless, marine turtles were reported nesting in marginal reproductive areas south (Camilo et al, 2009) and north (Parente et al, 2006) of this core area. According to Lesica & Allendorf (1995), the study of peripheral populations, which is the subject of this paper, may help in the conservation of the species as a whole.…”
