Abstract: Species of the Leptodactylus fuscus group lay their eggs in foam nests in underground chambers the males excavate. However, little is known about the interactions between males and females while egg-laying. We recorded egg-laying behavior in Leptodactylus fuscus. Observations were possible because the chambers walls were partially damaged (small holes). Within the chamber, the male holds the female in an axillary amplexus. In a typical sequence of egg-releasing/foambeating, the male makes alternate movements o… Show more

“…In Roraima, reproductive biology and mating behavior were described (MARTINS, 1988). In the southeast of Brazil, BRASILEIRO et al (2005) and OLIVEIRA-FILHO et al (2005) also studied seasonality reproductive patterns. In Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul, the reproduction occurs during rainy season (AVILA & FERREIRA, 2004) and the reproductive biology was studied by PRADO & HADDAD (2003, 2005.…”

“…2005). Even in L. fuscus , one of the species of the genus whose reproductive aspects have been studied in greatest detail (Oliveira Filho et al. 2005; Arzabe and Prado 2006), the participation of the female in the process of nuptial cavity building was recently described, specifically in the closing of the chamber: ‘Initially she pressed her nose against the substrate, pushing small grains of moist sand toward the burrow entrance.…”
