RAPELD: a modification of the Gentry method for biodiversity surveys in long-term ecological research sites

Abstract: Our objectives were to develop a method that would be appropriate for long-term ecological studies, but that would permit rapid surveys to evaluate biotic complementarity and land-use planning in Amazonia. The Amazon basin covers about 7 million km 2 . Therefore, even a sparse coverage, with one sample site per 10.000 km 2 , would require about 700 sampling sites. Financial considerations limit the number of sites and investment at each site, but incomplete coverage makes evaluation of biotic complementarity d… Show more

“…In the first period, we used four preestablished trails, each approximately 2 km in length, two of which passed through savanna formations (rocky outcrop Cerrado -Cerrado Rupestre and Typical Cerrado -Cerrado Típico) and two through forest formations (Gallery Forest and Semideciduous Forest). In the second period we sampled the module that follows the RAPELD model (Magnusson et al 2005), in which two parallel 5-km-long trails, one kilometer apart from each other, pass through different Cerrado phytophysiognomies, such as Shrubby Grassland Cerrado (Cerrado Ralo), Typical Cerrado, Semideciduous Forest and Gallery Forest (sensu Ribeiro & Walter 2008).…”

“…and Attalea spp. The canopy height is of 30-37 m with some emergent trees reaching up to 40-45 m. The mean temperature is 26ºC and the mean annual rainfall between 1965 and 1980 was of 1,362±400 mm, with a short dry season between July and September (Marques-Filho et al, 1981).…”
