Occurence of oligochaeta living on larvae of odonata from ipeúna (São Paulo state, Brazil)

Abstract: The occurrence of oligochaetes species living on larvae of Odonata is reported for the first time. There were found Nais variabilis (Piguet, 1906) (Oligochaeta: Naididae) and Chaetogaster diastrophus (Gruithuisen, 1828) (Oligochaeta: Naididae) living on Elasmothemis cannacrioides (Calvert, 1906) (Anisoptera: Libellulidae) and on Mnesarete (Cowley, 1934) (Zygoptera: Calopterygidae).

“…In Brazil, its occurrence has only been reported in the state of São Paulo. It is a predatory species, associated with clean water environments (Dumnicka 1994), having been found in various habitats, such as lakes (Collado & Schmelz 2001a, Ohtaka 2001, low-order tropical streams (Gorni & Alves 2008b) and mountain streams in temperate regions (Dumnicka 1994, Lencioni et al 2004, associated with bryophytes (Linhart et al 2002), sponges (Gorni & Alves 2008a) and on the backs of Odonata nymphs (Corbi et al 2004). In the present study it was found in streams flowing through Rock Field and Semideciduous Seasonal Forest areas, in pools and riffles.…”

“…No presente estudo, sete espécimes foram registrados habitando o córrego Galharada. Estudos prévios relatam a ocorrência desta espécie em ambientes aquáticos do Pantanal Mato-Grossense (Takeda et al 2000) e sobre o dorso de larvas de Odonata (Ipeúna, Estado de São Paulo) (Corbi et al 2004) 5. “…This results in fragmented and scarce information on the invertebrate fauna (Magurran, 2011), especially in continental aquatic ecosystems, where the information about this group is even more incomplete (Agostinho et al 2005). Biota Neotrop., 17(1): e20160232, 2017 http://www.scielo.br/bn http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/1676-0611- BN-2016-0232 Aquatic Oligochaeta worms are one of the most abundant organisms in continental aquatic fauna and can be found in sediments, in water columns or associated to other organisms such as molluscs (Gorni & Alves, 2006), aquatic macrophytes (Alves & Gorni, 2007), insect larvae (Corbi et al 2004), bryophytes (Gorni & Alves, 2007), sponges (Gorni & Alves, 2008a) and amphibians (Oda et al, 2015). It is important to highlight that these organisms are important for organic matter cycling of freshwater ecosystems, bioturbation processes, biomonitoring research, aquatic ecotoxicology and test organisms (Chapman, 2001, Corbi et al 2015.…”
