An updated checklist of medusae and ctenophores is presented for the first time for the area comprised by the Bahía Blanca Estuary, the adjacent shelf El Rincón and Monte Hermoso beach, on the southwest coast of Buenos Aires province (Argentina). The area is highly productive and provides several ecosystem services including fishing and tourism. Updated information on the biodiversity of medusae and ctenophores species is essential for the study area, given that these species can affect ecosystem services. The list includes 23 hydromedusae, 3 scyphomedusae, and 3 ctenophores. Five hydromedusae (Halitiara formosa, Amphinema dinema, Aequorea forskalea, Clytia lomae and Halopsis ocellata) were firstly observed in this area. Three species of medusae, 2 hydromedusae (Olindias sambaquiensis and Liriope tetraphylla) and 1 scyphomedusae (Chrysaora lactea) pose a potential health risk, due to their toxicity to humans. Considering the size of the study area, the Bahía Blanca region has a comparatively high species richness of hydromedusae, higher than larger zones previously studied along the temperate SW Atlantic Ocean. The present report provides the baseline knowledge of gelatinous species for the Bahía Blanca region.

With growing interest in research and display of living jellyfish workers are realizing the difficulty in obtaining and maintaining a healthy collection consistently. This report identifies the causes for the uncertainty in locating specimens and summarizes the latest technology, techniques and avenues for acquiring jellyfish for captive maintenance. Responsibility inherent with jellyfish transport for the prevention of incidental escape is also discussed.

ABSTRACT. The scyphozoan Phyllorhiza punctata von Lendenfeld, 1884 (Mastigiidae), known only from IndoPacific waters prior to the 1950s, is today found far from its original distribution, probably due to human activities. First seen in 1955 in Brazilian waters, medusae were found in southern and southeastern coasts, disappearing (at least as a medusa) in the early 1960's. Another population was found in the late 1990's, in the state of Bahia, and again in late 2001, many sightings were reported along the coasts of Paraná and Santa Catarina (25º20'S, 48º12'W to 27º26'S, 48º22'W). A large summer bloom, followed by decline and disappearance in winter and spring, occurs every year since then. The reasons for this recent mass occurrence are unknown. Despite few scattered records of the species in Brazil, it is probably widespread, occurring from the coast of Ceará (3º43'S, 38º28'W), in the northeast, to Santa Catarina, in the south.
