Feed sorting and intake affected by the physical form and composition of the total mixed ration in dairy cows

Abstract: This study observes the effects of manipulating the diet in its physical form and in cereal composition of the concentrate on sorting behaviour, feed intake, composition of milk, and degree of discomfort in dairy cows. In a commercial dairy farm with 360 mid-lactation Holstein cows (averaged 105 days), three treatments of feeding handling were applied sequentially during 120 days, each separated by periods of 30 days of resting: (1) Time of chopping of the total mixed ration (TMR): 15min (N= 180) and 23min (N=… Show more

“…In addition, some authors (Gonzalez et al, 2015) indicated that rations with low fiber may lead to reduced milk fat content and to avoid fat depression of milking cows, minimum of 25% dietary neutral detergent fiber (NDF) was suggested. As known, all the dairy feeding strategies are performed by estimating feed intake capacity and performance of the dairy cows (Tarkowski, 2008).…”

“…Growth performance and digestibility are essential factors that are related to the physical effectiveness of a ration or feeding ingredients. Excessive amount of long fibres could limit dry matter intake and digestibility, as a short particle size decreases chewing activity and results in a decline of saliva production and rumen pH [18] . Especially regarding this concern, several studies have been conducted on dairy cows [8,19,20] , beef cattle [7,21] and goats [22] .…”

“…Although, the solution for monitoring and control the cattle farm operation and environmental condition available [11][12][13][14][15][16] but the existing are still lacking of an automated feeder system. An effient feeding system can produce cattle that are physical and geneticly healthy [17][18][19][20]. Nowadays, healthy cattle that are well feed can be monitored using computer vison to gauge further the amount of food taken by each individual cattle [21][22][23][24][25].…”
