Considering that neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.) causes deleterious effects on fertility, the objective was to evaluate the effect of feeding quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica Linnaeus, 1758) of 90 days old with neem seeds on seminal quality, biometric parameters, and testicular morphometrics, as an experimental model. After the 30 day adaptation period to the experimental conditions, birds were randomly distributed in five treatments of neem seeds incorporated into feed, with 10 replicates: T1 (0%), T2 (5%), T3 (10%), T4 (20%) and T5 (40%). After 60 days of receiving experimental rations, their semen was collected to evaluate the sperm quality, the birds were euthanized, and testes were submitted to biometric, histological, and histomorphometric evaluation. The data were evaluated by analysis of variance and later by Tukey test with a significance level of 5%. The mean values of testicle weight, length, and width significantly decreased in T4 and T5, due degeneration of germinal epithelial cells. In these treatments, it occurred a significant increase (P>0.05) in the average values of the tunica albuginea thickness and a significant reduction in the values of the seminiferous tubule diameter and the height of the germinal epithelium. In addition, the mean values of seminal volume, sperm concentration, sperm motility, vigor, and sperm viability were significantly reduced. Thus, the use of neem in bird feeding, as well as the use for therapeutic purposes, is questionable, considering its negative impact on reproduction.

O presente estudo foi conduzido com o objetivo de avaliar as características de silagem confeccionadas com forragem de sorgo associada as folhas do neem em diferentes níveis de substituição. O experimento foi realizado no IFRN – Campus Apodi. O sorgo utilizado foi da variedade BRS Ponta Negra consorciado com a forragem do neem (folhas e pecíolos). Foram confeccionados 48 minissilos, preenchidos com as matérias-primas previamente trituradas, sendo abertos aos 28 e 35 dias após a ensilagem, distribuídos em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado com os cinco níveis de substituição das folhas do neem (0; 25; 50; 75 e 100%) e um do neem com associação de melaço (100% + M), sendo 4 repetições. Analisando os resultados obtidos para matéria seca (MS) tem-se que a mesma sofreu influência a medida que aumentava os níveis de substituição. O teor de proteína bruta (PB) aumentou de acordo com o aumento do nível de substituição do sorgo pelo neem. Quanto ao teor de fibra insolúvel em detergente neutro (FDN) percebe que os níveis de substituição 50; 75 e 100% de neem, além dos 100% neem + melaço, aos 28 dias de armazenamento não diferiram estatisticamente. As temperaturas das silagens foram influenciadas pelo nível de substituição de sorgo pelo neem aos 28 dias. Para o pH não foi observado diferença significativa evidenciando uma boa qualidade de silagem se mantendo na média de 3,51 a 4,15. Portanto, a substituição da forragem de sorgo pelo neem deve ser utilizada até o nível de 25%, assim como se pode ensilar o neem associado a 5% de melaço, aos 35 dias de armazenamento, pois a composição química foi considerada satisfatória, configurando-se como uma alternativa que pode ser usada na alimentação dos ruminantes.

Albendazole (ABZ), a benzimidazole widely used to control gastrointestinal parasites, is poorly soluble in water, resulting in variable and incomplete bioavailability. This has favored the appearance ABZ-resistant nematodes and, consequently, an increase in its clinical ineffectiveness. Among the pharmaceutical techniques developed to increase drug efficacy, cyclodextrins (CDs) and other polymers have been extensively used with water-insoluble pharmaceutical drugs to increase their solubility and availability. Our objective was to prepare ABZ formulations, including β-cyclodextrin (βCD) or hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD), associated or not to the water-soluble polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). These formulations had their solubility and anthelmintic effect both evaluated in vitro. Also, their anthelmintic efficacy was evaluated in lambs naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) through the fecal egg count (FEC) reduction test. In vitro, the complex ABZ/HPβCD had higher solubility than ABZ/βCD. The addition of PVP to the complexes increased solubility and dissolution rates more effectively for ABZ/HPβCD than for ABZ/βCD. In vivo, 48 lambs naturally infected with GIN were divided into six experimental groups: control, ABZ, ABZ/βCD, ABZ/βCD-PVP, ABZ/HPβCD, and ABZ/HPβCD-PVP. Each treated animal received 10 mg/kg of body weight (based on the ABZ dose) for three consecutive days. After 10 days of the last administered dose, treatment efficacy was calculated. The efficacy values were as follows: ABZ (70.33%), ABZ/βCD (85.33%), ABZ/βCD-PVP (82.86%), ABZ/HPβCD (78.37%), and ABZ/HPβCD-PVP (43.79%). In vitro, ABZ/HPβCD and ABZ/HPβCD-PVP had high solubility and dissolution rates. In vivo, although the efficacies of ABZ/βCD, ABZ/βCD-PVP, and ABZ/HPβCD increased slightly when compared to pure ABZ, this increase was not significant (P > 0.05).
