Abstract: This study aimed at identifying and quantifying the parasites of wild and cultured dusky grouper Epinephelus marginatus. During a year and thereby all four seasons, 20 wild and 20 cultured groupers were examined for the presence of parasites, except in the last season, in which 19 wild and 20 cultured fish were examined, totalling 159 groupers analysed from Ubatuba, southeastern Brazil. Prevalence, mean intensity of infection, mean abundance and mean relative dominance were calculated. Five species of parasite… Show more

“…The circulation rate of the tanks was 200% (total water volume of the tanks was renewed twice a day). Before entering the system, all the fish were kept in a freshwater bath for 5 min (Kerber, Sanches, Santiago, & Luque, ; Roumbedakis et al, ) to eliminate any ectoparasites. Evaporative losses from the system were restored with deionized water daily.…”

“…Other localities: Off Rosas, Mediterranean Sea, France [ 25 ]; off Banyuls-sur-Mer, France [ 8 , 9 ]; off Ilhas Cagarras, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil [ 11 ]; off Ubatuba, coast of São Paulo, south-eastern Brazil [ 26 ]; off Barra Velha, State of Santa Catarina, Brazil [ 2 ]; Sfax (fish market), Tunisia (present study). The Bay of Naples, Italy is sometimes indicated as a locality based on Ulmer & James (1981) [ 27 ] but this paper does not describe the sclerotised vagina so it could be, in our opinion, any species of Pseudorhabdosynochus .…”

“…Parasitic infections can also cause stress in the host, and are responsible for decreased immunity and greater susceptibility to other diseases (CHU et al 2013). Neobenedenia melleni has been previously reported in farmed cobia (KERBER et al 2011) and grouper (ROUMBEDAKIS et al, 2013) in Brazil, and should be considered as an emerging problem for marine fish farming in Brazil.…”
