Effects of recurrent disturbances on the periphyton community downstream of a dammed watercourse

Abstract: We evaluate experimentally the effect of a sequential disturbance-desiccation-on the structure and dynamics of a periphytic algal community in a semilotic environment of the Upper Paraná River floodplain. We tested the hypothesis that the presence of recurrent disturbances have a direct negative effect on the attributes of the periphyton community. The sequential effect of desiccation on the periphytic community promoted its significant decrease in density, while the same was not observed in species richness. … Show more

“…Hydrological changes influence and limit the distribution and biological function of species in these ecosystems, such as freshwater algae and diatom community. Fluctuations in water level result in changes in the available habitat, light, chemical conditions, stratification, and mixing regimes subsequently affecting the composition and density of the freshwater algae (Rodrigues and Bicudo 2001;Fonseca and Rodrigues 2005;Algarte et al 2006;Leandrini et al 2008;Algarte et al 2009;Cantonati et al 2009;Murakami and Rodrigues 2009;Zanon et al 2013;Carapunarla et al 2014).…”

“…The knowledge of the temporal and spatial dynamics of functional strategies of periphytic algae contributes to predicting, generalizing and understanding processes structuring these communities (Dunck et al 2013;Cibils et al 2015;Cibils-Martina et al 2017). Because they have a sessile life style (for the most part) and short life cycle, periphytic algae respond rapidly to environmental changes and are directly influenced by environmental alterations in temperature, water velocity, light and nutrient availability (Biggs 1996;Stevenson 1996;Bourassa and Cattaneo 2000;Moresco et al 2009;Ferragut and Bicudo 2010;Lange et al 2011;Larson and Passy 2012;Algarte et al 2013;Dunck et al 2013;Moresco and Rodrigues 2013;Rodrigues et al 2013;Zanon et al 2013). They exhibit different biological traits, varying in size, life form (unicellular, filamentous and colonial) and forms of adherence to the substrate (loosely attached and firmly attached).…”

“…Research investigating the structure and functioning of biological communities on the Paraná river floodplain all point to the river's hydrological regime and tributaries as the main factors influencing the region's ecological processes (THOMAZ et al, 2007). Hydrometric level variation and its effect on aquatic communities has been examined on several occasions with regard to the Paraná river floodplain, including work focusing on the local periphyton community (ALGARTE et al, 2006(ALGARTE et al, , 2009 LEANDRINI et al, 2008;BICUDO, 2001;ZANON et al, 2013;and others). Most of these studies involved analysis of periphytic algae in their ecological context on natural substrate: the aquatic macrophyte Eichhornia azurea Kunth, which covers extensive areas on the littoral margins of different environments on the floodplain.…”
