Abstract: The main purpose of this study is to perform a nitrogen budget survey for the entire Brazilian Amazon region. The main inputs of nitrogen to the region are biological nitrogen fixation occurring in tropical forests (7.7 Tg.yr-1), and biological nitrogen fixation in agricultural lands mainly due to the cultivation of a large area with soybean, which is an important nitrogen-fixing crop (1.68 Tg.yr-1). The input due to the use of N fertilizers (0.48 Tg.yr-1) is still incipient compared to the other two inputs me… Show more

“…Due to the dynamics of the river ecosystem and its response to the interactions climate/hydrology, sampling strategies have to consider the temporal dynamics of the system (represented mainly by the fluvial dynamics) during periods of high water and low water Martinelli et al, 2012;Agostinho et al, 2009) (Figure 3).…”

“…The consumption in importing countries may increase without appreciating the constraints of limited natural resources or pollution, while the exporting countries suffer intensive environmental burdens, such as soil N mining, loss of soil fertility, N 2 O emissions, GHG emission, air and water pollution, and loss of biodiversity (Galloway et al 2008, Schipanski andBennett 2012). For example, deforestation in the Amazon is related to the massive cultivation of soybean exports to China (Martinelli et al 2012, Lassaletta et al 2014b. The eutrophication of the Gulf of Mexico in the US is largely caused by the maize-soybean rotation in the corn-belt area of the Mississippi river basin, where 49% of the soybean and 14% of the maize produced are destined for export (McLellan et al 2015).…”
