Abstract: The present study used fixed and increasing velocity tests in an experimental apparatus based on Brett's respirometer to examine prolonged and sustained speeds of the "mandi-amarelo", Pimelodus maculatus. When comparing the curves of critical speed versus total length between the mandi and the sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka, it is observed that for an equal total length, the mandi presents a greater speed, probably due to water temperature differences. The sustained speed for the species was estimated in 5 … Show more

“…Despite the importance of the characteristics of Neotropical migratory species, including their behavior, morphology, physiology, and capacities, these characteristics have been ignored in formulating design criteria for fish passages in Brazil. The factor of greatest concern in fish passage design is the swimming performance of migratory species (Beach, 1984;Santos et al, 2008). This factor is considered one of the primary determinants of survival because it defines the ability of the fish to conduct activities in which swimming is involved (Beamish, 1978;Plaut, 2001).…”

“…The swimming capacity of Brazilian fishes is an important parameter for dimensioning fish passages, although no fish passage yet built takes into consideration this important characteristic of the Neotropical species . Research in this area is recently being conducted in Brazil (Santos et al, , 2008Sampaio et al, 2009) (Kaplan & Meier, 1958). Censored observations are indicated by x's and represent the time elapsed between release and the last observed passage event for either species.…”

“…Beach, 1984;Zou, 1982;Videler, 1993;Keynard, 1993). Critical velocities have been estimated for non salmonid species inhabiting northern hemisphere (Pavlov, 1989) but swimming capabilities for neotropical species are still scant (de Castro et al, 2010;Santos et al, 2007Santos et al, , 2009. Most neotropical fishes are smaller than salmonids but compensate by displaying higher metabolic rates as they inhabit warmer rivers.…”
