Abstract: The elasmobranchs constitute an important resource in Argentinian fishing and they show reproductive characteristics that make them susceptible to the pressure of fishing. In spite of the importance of the resource our knowledge about the species of the Southwestern Atlantic is scarce. In this work we study the microanatomy of the oviduct and the oviducal gland of Sympterygia acuta. The results show a very folded oviduct with mucous and ciliated cells. The oviducal gland depicts the same zonation as other bato… Show more

“…The serous adenomers, similar to those of the baffle zone, produce the projections whereas the mucous ones coat them with mucus. The structure observed in S. bonapartii agrees with the geomorphologic characteristics of egg laying areas in the estuary of Bahía Blanca, and is similar to that seen in S. acuta (Galíndez and Estecondo, 2008).…”

“…In spite of the diversity of secreted products, the exact chemical composition has not been determined yet, but some investigations suggest that mucins may play the role as a lubricant between the egg and the capsule (Nalini, 1940). In S. bonapartii the presence of a different mucin in the last portion of the papillary zone, as in S. acuta (Galíndez and Estecondo, 2008) agrees with their function as an interface between the secondary envelope and the capsule itself.…”

“…About the genus Sympterygia there are very few investigations and they treat mainly ecological features (Pires, 1987;De-Queiroz, 1984;, parasitology (Romera, 1993;Tanzola et al, 1998) and some reproductive features (Mabragaña et al;2002, Oddone andVooren, 2002;Oddone and Velasco, 2004;Galíndez and Estecondo, 2008).…”
