Pollination and breeding system of Couepia uiti (Mart. and Zucc.) Benth (Chrysobalanaceae) in the Pantanal da Nhecolândia

Abstract: The pollination biology and breeding system of Couepia uiti was studied. In this species, flowers opened at 06:00 AM anthesis, and nectar production began at around 0800 h, reached a maximum volume from 09:30 AM to 10:30 AM, and decreased thereafter. The nectar sugar concentration increased continuously, but showed an abrupt increase from 10:00 AM to 12:00 AM. Pollen release occurred at about 09:30 AM and was quickly collected. The stigmas became receptive at around 12:00 AM. The pollinators of C. uiti include… Show more

“…In self-incompatible plants, self-pollination lowered the seed-setting rate 16 whereas cross-pollinated plants gave a higher fruit setting rate 35,36,38,39 . Manual selfpollination did not increase the seed-setting rate due to inbreeding depression 36,39,40 . Self-incompatibility in Crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia spp.…”

“…Manual cross-pollination resulted in 11% fruit set (xenogamy). In natural conditions, where flowers are mostly visited by honeybees, fruit set did not exceed 15% (Paulino-Neto 2007).…”

“…The flowers were unbagged at 12:00 am (period of stigmatic receptivity, see Paulino-Neto 2007), and single visits were recorded until 2:00 pm. We carried out this experiment for a maximum time of 2 h. Unvisited flowers or flowers that we were unable to evaluate bee visitation behavior were discarded.…”
