First record of the bat Mimon crenulatum (E. Geoffroy, 1801) (Mammalia: Chiroptera) in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil

Abstract: The present study reports an extension of the geographic range of the phyllostomid bat Mimon crenulatum. This is the first record of this species in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil. Bats were captured in two conservation units of the Atlantic Forest. Data on the ecology and morphometry of the individuals are presented and compared with data recorded for other localities. The occurrence of this bat species in the region, though new, is consistent with information on its natural history found in… Show more

“…As G. crenulatum is an insectivorous bat that forages in the understory (Willig, 1983;Pedro et al, 1994;Simmons and Voss, 1998;Gian nini and Kalko, 2005;Mello and Pol, 2006;, it depends on echolocation to catch prey and fulfill its energetic demands (Schnitzler and Kalko, 2001). Furthermore, considering that female bats spend time nursing and feeding pups (Kunz and Hood, 2000) and thus have less available time to secure food, females of G. crenulatum are expected to be effective foragers.…”

“…But previous studies on sexual size differentiation have failed to report differences in dental traits between males and females of G. crenulatum (Willig, 1983;Simmons and Voss, 1998); other studies have noted that there is not enough information about the diet differentiation of this species (Pedro et al, 1994;Simmons and Voss, 1998;Giannini and Kalko, 2005;Mello and Pol, 2006); and further to this, the method used for field captures of the current specimens was performed without space and time stra tification (Matthias et al, 2005;Willig et al, 2007). Therefore, differences in nose-leaves between sexes would not be related to resource partitioning.…”
