Spatial synchrony of a highly endemic fish Assemblage (Segredo Reservoir, Iguaçu River, Paraná State, Brazil)

Abstract: In this study, patterns of spatial synchrony in population fluctuations (cross-correlation) of an endemic fish assemblage of a Neotropical reservoir (Segredo Reservoir, Iguaçu River, Paraná State, Brazil) were reported. First, the level of population synchrony for 20 species was estimated. Second, population synchrony was correlated, using the Mantel test, with geographical distances among sites (n = 11) and also environmental synchrony (temperature). Nine species presented significant correlations between spa… Show more

“…Our findings reveal that population dynamics of fish species in the Upper Paraná River floodplain range from independent to synchronous. Despite these variable levels of spatial synchrony, the predominance of synchronous dynamics is in line with other studies on fish populations (Bunnell et al., 2010; Domingues et al., 2005; Larios‐López et al., 2020; Ruetz et al., 2005; Stowe et al., 2020; Tedesco et al., 2004). Also, spatial synchrony was high for P. lineatus , an economically and ecologically important species (Agostinho et al., 2007).…”

“…Similar results were found for freshwater fish species in other aquatic ecosystems (e.g. r ranging from −0.01 to 0.31 in a reservoir, Domingues et al, 2005; from −0.03 to 0.17 in European streams, Chevalier et al, 2014; from 0.01 to 0.57 in floodplain lakes, Granzotti et 2022; from 0.14 to 0.44 in wetlands, Ruetz et al, 2005). Low levels of spatial synchrony may indicate that local processes (e.g.…”

“…Spatial synchrony studies with multiple species have shown that there can be a large interspecific variation in the level of synchrony (Anderson et al, 2018; Burrows et al, 2002; Domingues et al, 2005; Jones et al, 2007). This interspecific variation could be attributed to species‐specific characteristics (Pandit et al, 2013; Ruetz et al, 2005; Vindstad et al, 2019), suggesting that functionally similar species may have similar levels of spatial synchrony.…”

“…However, both intraclass correlation coefficients for nearby environments associated with the same river, as well as the Mantel statistic, suggest that proximity did not influence the abundance fluctuation patterns of these organisms. However, for some species of insects (HANSKI and WOIWOD, 1993), birds (RANTA et al, 1995), and fish (DOMINGUES et al, 2005) spatial synchrony significantly decreased as the distance between locations increased.…”
