Evidence indicating participation of the serotonergic system in controlling feeding behavior in Coturnix japonica (Galliformes: Aves)

Abstract: We investigated participation of the brain serotonergic system in food intake control by using oral and systemic administration of serotonin precursors in quails (Coturnix japonica). Dietary supplemental tryptophan (0.1-50.0 g/kg) provoked a dose-dependent inhibition of food intake during a 5-h observation period, which persisted up to 24 h for doses of 30.0 and 50.0 g/kg. Normally fed and fasted animals treated with hydroxytryptophan (12.5-50.0 mg/kg) by the intracoelomic route showed an acute inhibition of f… Show more

“…Two investigation possibilities were undertaken: Firstly, 5-HT was administered by sc route in quails to evaluate behavioral reactions. Previous studies of our laboratory showed evidence of the central action of 5-HT systemically injected in the evaluation of its effect (and of their precursors) in the feeding behavior of quails (Reis et al, 2005). In such study, our group showed for the first time, a hypnogenic action induced by systemic serotonin.…”

“…In a previous study, we demonstrated for the first time that 5-HT administered peripherally permeates the BBB in quails (Reis et al, 2005). Behavioral and neuropharmacological evidence of this response was investigated in the present study.…”

“…4,5 Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) is thought to play a key role in the suppression of appetite. [6][7][8] Clinical studies provide evidence that 5-HT is involved in the disturbances of eating disorders. 9 Hypothalamus is known to have an important role in the regulation of appetite by transducing satiety signals of 5-HT.…”

“…This experimental maneuver is widely used to evaluate the brain serotonin production and subsequent increase of the serotoninergic transmission (Fernstrom, 1983;Badauê-Passos et al, 2003;Reis et al, 2005). TPO is considered the rate-limiting enzyme of the serotonin synthesis in serotoninergic neurons (Tyce, 1990;Boadle-Biber, 1993).…”
