Age and growth of the Duckbill Catfish (Sorubim cf. lima) in the Pantanal

Abstract: The Duckbill Catfish, Sorubim lima, is a predator of large South American rivers. The age and growth of S. lima were studied based on the pectoral fin-spines of samples collected from the Cuiabá River, Pantanal. The samples were taken from commercial and experimental hook-and-line fishing. An analysis of the marginal increment suggests that the growth rings are formed once a year during the dry season, from July to September (ANOVA type I: F = 4.183; g.l. = 3 and 104; p = 0.008). The estimate of the parameters… Show more

“…The first during September, matching the reproductive migration, while the other was formed in February during the trophic migration. Similar results concerning growth ring formation were reported by Mateus and Petrere (2004) for the "pintado" (Pseudoplatystoma corruscans), from the Cuiabá River basin, and by Penha et al (2004) for the "jurupensem" (Sorubim cf. lima) from the Cuibá River.…”

“…For H. platyrhynchos the equation was Fl = 64 (1-e -0.222 (t+2.149) ) (Penha et al, 2004b), and for S. lima was Fl = 56 (1-e -0.245(t+2.605) ) (Penha et al, 2004a).…”

“…Like others Pimelodidae, they are predators of others fish and are therefore important for the functioning of aquatic ecosystems. Age and growth studies indicate that H. platyrhynchos has a longevity (A 0.95 ) of 11.4 years and an asymptotic length (L ∞ ) of 64.0 cm (Penha et al, 2004b), while S. lima presents an A 0.95 of 9.6 years and an L ∞ of 56.0 cm (Penha et al, 2004a). Adults of both species are caught by commercial fishing, while juveniles are used as ornamental fish.…”
