Differential leucokocyte counts in ''dourado'', Salminus maxillosus Valenciennes, 1840, from the Mogi-Guaçu River, Pirassununga, SP

Abstract: From August, 1996 to December, 1997, 293 of "dourado" specimens, Salminus maxillosus (Valencienes, 1840), of various sizes, were caught in Mogi-Guaçu River, Emas Falls, for hematologic studies. Total weight (Wt in g) and length (Lt in cm) were taken for each individual animal. Smears were prepared from blood samples and utilized for differential leukocyte counts (lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, special granulocytic cell and immature cells). The mean percentages of leukocytes were determined a… Show more

“…The control hematological profile in ringtail pike cichlid proved to be qualitatively similar to those of other species mentioned in the literature, with predominant lymphocytes, followed by neutrophils and monocytes and absence of basophil and eosinophil (Tavares‐Dias and Faustino, ; Tavares‐Dias et al., ; Ranzani‐Paiva et al., ; Coffigny et al., ). The quantitative cellular values were different from other species such as Oreochromis niloticus and Ramdia quelen, but this was expected due to interspecific variations (Tavares‐Dias et al., ; Tavares‐Dias, ).…”

“…A rearing system for the maximization of fish productivity is the aim of fishery management programmers, and an evaluation of the physiological status of the fish during rearing is necessary to achieve this. Serum biochemical data are of immense importance in monitoring the health status of aquatic organisms, especially in fisheries management programs [7]- [9]. Table 1).…”

“…Blood serum biochemical data are used routinely in health care of humans and domestic animals. Blood biochemical evaluations are also gradually becoming a routine practice for determining health status in fish [7]- [9], and only a few normal values for small number biochemical parameters have been established for some teleosts [10].…”
