Abstract: We studied the parasitism by larvae of the chigger mite Eutrombicula alfreddugesi on the lizard community of Restinga de Jurubatiba, Rio de Janeiro State, Southeastern Brazil. We investigated the patterns of infestation (prevalence and intensity) of chigger mites in four sympatric lizards: Tropidurus torquatus, Mabuya agilis, M. macrorhyncha and Cnemidophorus littoralis. All lizards collected were checked for the presence of mites, which were counted under stereomicroscope. We tested the relationship between i… Show more

“…This may result from the fact that larger and probably older geckos tend to present a greater diversity of parasites, prevalence, and mean intensity of infection due to the comparatively longer time of exposition and contact with infection sources (Vogel and Bundy, 1987;Cunha-Barros et al, 2003). The diet composition of hosts also could influence these infection parameters (Rocha, 1989;Vitt, 2000;Anjos et.…”

“…Most papers on the subject have dealt with the description of new parasite taxa or the intensity and prevalence of parasitism (VERCAMMEN-GRANDJEAN & AUDY 1965, CUNHA-BARROS & ROCHA 2000, DURDEN et al 2002, CUNHA-BARROS et al 2003, GARCÍA-DE-LA-PEÑA et al 2004, KLUKOWSKI 2004. Mite pockets are also useful in the studies of lizard taxonomy (RODRIGUES 1987, FROST 1992, MCGUIRE 1996, FROST et al 2001) and the presence and morphology of these structures are used as characters in analyses that intend to understand the evolutionary history and the relationship of studied taxa…”

“…Several subsequent authors (see e.g. Poulin 1996, Cunha-Barros et al 2003, Marques and Cabral 2007, Mladieno et al 2012 have reached similar conclusions. The purpose of our present account here is to explain that this is an over-interpretation of results.…”
