Parotocinclus planicauda, a new species of the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae from Southeastern Brazil (Ostariophysi: Loricariidae)

Abstract: Parotocinclus planicauda, a new species from a tributary of the Doce River drainage in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, is distinguished from all other species of the genus by the presence of a caudal peduncle almost quadrangular in cross section; the anterior position of the adipose fin, close to the dorsal fin insertion; and very small orbits. A key to the Parotocinclus species of eastern Brazilian coastal rivers south of the São Francisco River is provided.

“…Sexual dimorphism related to pelvic-fin length was recorded for some loricariids (Garavello and Britski 2003). To assess possible sexual dimorphism in P. maculicauda and H. notatus that could bias our interpretations, we distinguished males and females by examination of urogenital papilla.…”

Langeani, 1990;Oyakawa, 1993;Schaefer, 1997;Oliveira & Oyakawa, 1999;Britto & Castro, 2002;Ribeiro et al, 2002;Wosiacki, 2004), situação menos freqüente no rio Doce (e. g. Garavello & Britski, 2003).…”
