Mesh size and bird capture rates in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil

Abstract: Mist-nets alternating 36-mm and 61-mm mesh in woods and low vegetation of "cerrado" (Brazilian savanna) tested bird-capture efficiency relative to bird length and mass. Of 1,296 birds captured and 102 species, 785 (93 species) were with 36-m mesh and 511 (69 species) with 61-mm mesh. The 61-mm mesh improved capture rates only for some larger species; so, in general, 36-mm mesh mistnets are more appropriate for field work in "cerrado" areas.

“…Although this variation in the landscape provides suitable conditions for high bird species richness, there is a knowledge gap in Mato Grosso do Sul concerning species occurrence and distribution (Pivatto et al 2006). Some studies have been undertaken to determine the bird composition of specific localities outside the Pantanal wetland, such as in the east (Piratelli et al 2001;Piratelli and Pereira 2002;Piratelli 2003;Piratelli and Blake 2006), west , north (Silva et al 2006), south (Gimenes et al 2007Faxina and Schlemmermeyer 2010) and central regions of the state (Ilha and Mercante 2003a, b). Especially the southern region has been poorly studied in terms of its avifauna, and most of the available information is restricted to locations near the Paraná River (Straube and Urben-Filho 2002).…”

“…Specific techniques focused in capturing and handling tinamous in the field are still poorly available in the scientific literature and usually lack detailed descriptions of species-specific adaptions for different environments. Despite the difficulties, Piratelli (2003), Brennan (2004), Ghizoni-Jr. & Graipel (2005), Garnero et al (2006), Freitas et al (2013), Garitano-Zavala et al (2013) and Silva et al (2013) described procedures that resulted in successfully capture of tinamous in their natural habitats.…”
