The terrestrial reptile fauna of the Abrolhos Archipelago: species list and ecological aspects

Abstract: We have studied the terrestrial reptile fauna of the Abrolhos Archipelago (a group of five islands located ca. 70 km off the southern coast of the State of Bahia, Brazil) and analyze here some of its ecological aspects such as diet, thermal ecology, activity, and some reproductive parameters. Three lizards comprise the archipelago's terrestrial reptile fauna: Tropidurus torquatus (Tropiduridae), Mabuya agilis (Scincidae), and Hemidactylus mabouia (Gekkonidae). The first two are diurnal and the latter is crepus… Show more

“…This result is similar to those reported for other T. torquatus populations (e.g. Alvarez et al 1985, Fialho et al 2000, Rocha et al 2002, Dutra et al 2011) and also for various congeneric species (e.g. Vitt 1991, Colli et al 1992, Van Sluys 1993, Mesquita et al 2006, Rocha & Siqueira 2008.…”

“…Most information has come from studies carried out in mainland coastal habitats of Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, and São Paulo States in southeastern Brazil (Vanzolini & Rebouças-Spieker, 1976;Rocha, 1994Rocha, , 2000, but the ecology of lizard populations living in insular habitats is mostly unknown, but for a few studies (e.g., Vanzolini & Rebouças-Spieker, 1976;Rocha et al, 2002). This lack of knowledge impedes understanding of how ecological differences may arise as a result of the insular environment.…”

“…The lizard Mabuya agilis (Scincidae) is widespread along the coastal plains of southeastern, and part of northeastern Brazil (Rocha, 2000;Rocha et al, 2002). Information regarding its ecology, including diet, has recently been published for mainland populations inhabiting restinga habitats , 1999Vrcibradic & Rocha, 1995a.…”

“…) and other general ecological aspects (VRCIBRADlC & ROCHA 1995, 1996ROCHA et al 2002a). The more the ecology of this species can be studied along different portions of its range, the more we can understand the range of variation of its ecological responses to the differences in habitat characteristics.…”
