Social behavior between mothers × young of sloths Bradypus variegatus SCHINZ, 1825 (Xenarthra: Bradypodidae)

Abstract: This study is a contribution to the ex situ and in situ conservation and preservation of Sloths. The behavioral records of the social interaction between mothers and offspring allow the detection of important learning interactions and psychomotor development. The results provide valuable information that may assist in improving management conditions of captive orphan progeny. They also favor a more effective monitoring of released or transferred specimens. Age is of fundamental importance in deciding what is i… Show more

“…At 7:20 a.m., 20 January 2005, two young sloths were observed being carried by an adult female in a similar fashion to that described by Soares and Carneiro (2002) for a single offspring. However, for the two young sloths, while one was attached directly to the ventral side of the body of the mother, the second young sloth was on top of the first, holding both the female and the back of the first young sloth (Fig.…”

“…The brown-throated three-toed sloth Brady pus variegatus, Schinz, 1985 is an arboreal mammal with a solitary social structure (Eisenberg, 1981). The interactions between individuals of this species occur generally during mating and parental care periods (Carvalho, 1960;Montgomery & Sunquist, 1974;Soares & Carneiro, 2002;Bezerra et al, 2008;Pinheiro, 2008). The interactions between sloths are more frequent in places with higher densities of individuals (Lara-Ruiz & Srbek-Araujo, 2006;Silva et al, 2013).…”

Adicionalmente, la estructura sexual de la población podría incrementar dicho efecto.…”
