Aspects of the reproductive biology of the shortfin mako, Isurus oxyrinchus (Elasmobranchii Lamnidae), in the Southeastern region of Brazil

Abstract: Uteri from four pregnant females and two newborn of shortfin mako, Isurus oxyrinchus, were collected in the southeastern region of Brazil, during September, October, and November of 1993 and 1994. All embryos were near-term with developing dentition and inner organs. Total length ranged from 64.5 to 72.0 cm, and the maximum number of embryos observed in a litter was 20. These observations further confirmed oophagy as a form of nutrition in this species, and its periodicity. The presence of teeth in the embryos… Show more

“…Size-at-birth of I. oxyrinchus in the South Pacific Ocean appears to be consistent with reports from other geographical regions, with L T at birth generally around 65-70 cm (Casey and Kohler, 1992;Duffy and Francis, 2001;Costa et al 2002;Maia et al 2007). Habitat use and selection influence population dynamics, intraspecific and interspecific interaction, ecosystem structure and biodiversity (Grubbs, 2010).…”

A major difference between our study area and these other regions is in the measures taken to regulate the catch and landing of sharks.…”

Temporal analysis of uterus width and gonadosomatic index, plus embryo length‐at‐age data, led Mollet et al.…”
