Abstract: -Pitfall trapping is probably the most frequently used method for sampling grounddwelling arthropods. While the capture of specimens in pitfall traps largely depends on the number of individuals in the sampled area, trap design and trapping effort for a given environment, can also affect sampling success. The aim of this study was to determine the best pitfall trapping design for collecting ground-dwelling arthropods in the wind-blown and cold arid steppe areas of Patagonia. We tested four designs of traps, si… Show more

“…We established a 200 m transect in the middle of each area, and installed 10 sampling points at uniform intervals of 20 m (Cheli & Corley, 2010;Guimarães, Lasmar, Querido, Tanure, & Ribas, 2014;Vasconcelos et al, 2014;Rabello et al, 2015). At each point we installed two pitfall traps, in each pitfall trap we placed 200 ml of solution of water, detergent (0.6 %) and salt (0.4 %).…”

“…Using these more sophisticated pitfall traps without preservative might then be more advisable in conservation areas in order to avoid potential killing endangered species through commonly used liquid preservatives (e.g. Schmidt et al, 2006;Calixto et al, 2007;Santos et al, 2007;Jud and Schmidt-Entling, 2008;Cheli and Corley, 2010;Schirmel et al, 2010;Matalin and Makarov, 2011). It has to be noted that due to the relatively short catching period in our study, slow-moving arthropods may be underrepresented (Topping and Sunderland, 1995).…”

This method is very attractive because it works when the observer is absent, it is very simple and inexpensive and it has been used in numerous studies (e.g.…”
