The orchid-bee faunas (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Euglossina) of the three largest forest remnants in the "Centro de Endemismo Pernambuco", northeastern Brazil, namely Estação Ecológica de Murici (ESEC Murici), RPPN Frei Caneca, and a forest preserve belonging to Usina Serra Grande, in the states of Alagoas and Pernambuco, were surveyed using seventeen different scents as baits to attract orchid-bee males. Eight sites were established in the three preserves, where samplings were carried out using two protocols: insect netting and bait trapping. We collected 3,479 orchid-bee males belonging to 29 species during 160 hours in early October, 2012. Seven species were collected in the "Centro de Endemismo Pernambuco" for the first time. Richness proved to be one of the highest of the entire Atlantic Forest domain, and diversity in some sites, especially at ESEC Murici, revealed to be one of the highest in the Neotropics. Eulaema felipei Nemésio, 2010, a species previously recorded only at ESEC Murici, was found in no other preserve in the region and its conservation status is discussed.Keywords: Atlantic Forest, Euglossina, euglossine bees, Hexapoda. O Centro de Endemismo Pernambuco é um 'hotspot' de biodiversidade para abelhas-das-orquídeas? ResumoAs faunas de abelhas-das-orquídeas (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Euglossina) dos três maiores remanescentes florestais do Centro de Endemismo Pernambuco, nordeste do Brazil, sendo elas a Estação Ecológica de Murici (ESEC Murici), a RPPN Frei Caneca e um remanescente florestal pertencente à Usina Serra Grande, foram amostradas com o uso de dezessete diferentes iscas aromáticas para atrair machos dessas abelhas. Oito sítios amostrais foram selecionados nas três áreas, onde amostragens foram realizadas sob duas metodologias: coleta ativa com rede entomológica e coleta com armadilhas. Foram coletados 3.479 machos de abelhas euglossinas durante 160 horas no início de outubro de 2012. Sete espécies foram registradas no Centro de Endemismo Pernambuco pela primeira vez. A riqueza da região se mostrou uma das mais altas de toda a Mata Atlântica, e a diversidade em alguns locais, especialmente na ESEC Murici, revelou-se uma das mais altas de toda a região Neotropical. Eulaema felipei Nemésio, 2010, uma espécie que só havia sido registrada na ESEC Murici, não foi encontrada em nenhuma outra área e seu estado de conservação é discutido.Palavras-chave: Mata Atlântica, Euglossina, abelhas euglossinas, Hexapoda.

“…In this study, the bees were caught between 9:15 a.m. and 01:47 p.m., with the peak of activity recorded between 11:00 a.m and 01:00 p.m. Santos and Sofia (2002), like Farias et al (2007) found a sharp decline in activity of these bees from 01:00 p.m. According to Oliveira (1999), the time of highest activity for most species of Euglossina in the Central Amazon in Brazil takes place between 09:00 a.m. and 04:00 p.m. (with temperature ranging between 24.5 º and 27.0 ºC), with a peak in abundance and diversity of individuals at 11:00 a.m. To this author several factors influence the activity of these insects such as the local temperature and supply of floral resources.…”

Bees of the subtribe Euglossina (Hym. Apidae) are Neotropical and are characterized by interaction with species of Orchidaceae. The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of Euglossina's species in a fragment of Araucaria Forest in Southern Brazil. Were determined eight sampling points in the Parque Municipal das Araucárias, which installed a set of traps containing odoriferous substances used as attractive (eugenol, eucalyptol, and vanillin). We collected 35 male specimens belonging to two species: Eulaema nigrita (n = 34) and Euglossa fimbriata (n = 1). Our findings add important information about the activity of Euglossina in the Araucaria Forest, since the occurrence of these bees is unprecedented for the region of Guarapuava.Key words: Araucaria forest; euglossina; fragments; pollination. ResumoAs abelhas da subtribo Euglossina (Hymenoptera: Apidae) são neotropicais e se destacam pela interação com espécies de Orchidaceae. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a ocorrência das espécies de Euglossina em um fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista no Sul do Brasil. Resumo. As abelhas Euglossina ocorrem exclusivamente na região neotropical, com cerca de 200 espécies descritas. Utilizando-se fragrâncias artificiais como iscas, é possível realizar levantamentos faunísticos e estudar diversos aspectos ecológicos do grupo. Com o intuito de contribuir ao conhecimento da biodiversidade dos brejos de altitude, no tocante às abelhas Euglossina, sete fragrâncias artificiais foram utilizadas como iscas em um remanescente na cidade de Areia, Paraíba, em distintos períodos climáticos. Foram coletados 2.981 machos pertencentes a 14 espécies de Euglossina. A abundância e a riqueza foram maiores no período de estiagem, havendo variação no horário de atividade de um período para o outro. De modo geral, no período chuvoso os machos foram mais ativos após as 11h e, no de estiagem, entre 8h e 11h. Euglossa carolina (Nemésio), Eulaema nigrita (Lepeletier) e Eulaema cingulata (Fabricius) foram as espécies mais abundantes nos dois períodos. Euglossina bees are distributed exclusively in the Neotropical Region, with around 200 species described. By the usage of artificial fragrances as baits, it is possible to accomplish faunistic inventories and study several ecological aspects of the group. To contribute to the knowledge of the biodiversity of a Montane Atlantic Forest remnant, concerning to Euglossina, seven fragrances were used as baits in different climatic periods. A total of 2,981 males belonging to 14 species of Euglossina were collected. Abundance and richness were higher in the dry period. Changes in the daily activity patterns were observed from a period to the other. Generally, in the rainy season the males were more active after 11am and in the dry season between 8am and 11am. Euglossa carolina (Nemésio), Eulaema nigrita (Lepeletier) and Eulaema cingulata (Fabricius) were the most abundant species on both periods. Ionone beta was the fragrance which attracted more species and specimens.
