Despite the importance of Dalbulus maidis (DeLong & Wolcott) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) as a vector of maize‐stunting pathogens, it is not understood how this leafhopper survives the maize off‐season in regions where overwintering hosts do not occur. We investigated migration and the use of alternate hosts as possible survival mechanisms for D. maidis during maize off‐season in Brazil. Dalbulus maidis populations were monitored with yellow sticky cards for 16–29 months in Anastácio (Mato Grosso do Sul State), in two farms with perennial pastures (Pasture1 and Pasture2), where maize had not been planted for >5 years, in a subsistence farm >20 km distant, where maize was annually planted (spring) (Maize1), and in Piracicaba (São Paulo State), where maize was grown year round (Maize2). RAPD‐PCR analysis of leafhoppers sampled on maize in two plots (Maize1 and Pasture1) at 15–20 and 110–120 days after germination was performed. Dalbulus maidis was trapped in the maize plots of all areas, but not in weedy or woody vegetation adjacent to the plots. Higher numbers were trapped throughout the year in Piracicaba, where maize was continuously grown under irrigation, and in the subsistence farm of Anastácio, where volunteer maize plants were available for long periods in the maize off‐season. In Anastácio farms, some population peaks were recorded in the absence of maize from midwinter to early spring, especially after soil plowing. RAPD‐PCR analysis showed that D. maidis populations sampled were genetically similar. Our data suggest that D. maidis uses a mixed strategy to survive the over‐season period in Brazil, in which part of the population overwinters locally on volunteer maize plants or nearby irrigated maize crops, whereas the other individuals migrate to colonize new maize crops in distant areas or regions. We hypothesize that immigrant D. maidis uses the contrast between plowed and vegetated soil as a visual cue for locating new maize crops.

Chlosyne lacinia saundersii is one of the most important pests of sunflower and it is the main target of insecticides applications. Larvae were collected in Londrina (PR), Santa Maria (RS), Dourados (MS), Ribeirão Preto (SP), Brasília (DF), Barreiras (BA), Uberaba (MG) and Vilhena (RO). Genomic DNA was extracted and amplified with ten-mer primers, which produced 101 loci. The size of the RAPD amplicons ranged from 180 to 2564 bp. Polymorphism among populations ranged from 31% to 67%, with the highest polymorphisms of 57% and 67% being detected in Uberaba and Vilhena populations, respectively. Populations with the highest similarity determined with Dice coefficient were from Ribeirão Preto and Barreiras, while insects from Londrina showed the highest similarity among them. Gene flow of C. lacinia saundersii 1.1 was lower than those previously observed for the noctuid Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner, suggesting that C. lacinia saundersii populations are more isolated than the ones of this noctuid. Through the Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA), RAPD variance was 33.64% among geographical populations and 66.36% within populations. These results suggest that populations of C. lacinia saundersii are genetically structured.

-Demands for sustainable agricultural systems have forested the development of biological control techniques, such as the use of the egg parasitoid Trichogramma Westwood. However, the arduous identification of the parasitoid at the species level, due to the tiny size and the morphological similarities is an obstacle to increasing its use. Molecular markers are useful to reach the specimen genome and avoid environmental effects that could misguide identification. Several molecular markers techniques are available and the ISSR technique has been used to differentiate close individuals, due to its high polymorphism level, reproducibility and low cost. The objective of this study was to measure the level of genetic differentiation among five lines of Trichogramma, using ISSR markers: three belonging to the species T. pretiosum Riley, one to T. atopovirilia Oatman & Platner and one to T. bruni Nagaraja. Morphological identification of the parasitoids was conducted at ESALQ/USPPiracicaba, SP. After DNA removal and standatization, PCR reactions were performed with 26 ISSR primers; 11 of them were selected because they presented greater polymorphism and consistency. Molecular data were converted into a binary matrix and analyzed (NTSYS v. 2.1). The 11 primers produced 172 polymorphic sections. Genetic similarity ranged from 19% to 96%, showing that the ISSR technique can efficiently identify DNA polymorphism in Trichogramma. Results also indicate important inter and intra-specific variations among the parasitoid lines.KEY WORDS: Molecular biology, microhymenopteran, identification, biological control RESUMO -A demanda por processos agrícolas racionais, em detrimento da utilização de estratégias convencionais, tem contribuído para o desenvolvimento de técnicas de controle biológico, como a utilização de parasitóides de ovos do gênero Trichogramma Westwood. Um entrave para sua utilização é a dificuldade na identificação das espécies, devido ao diminuto tamanho e à similaridade morfológica. Os marcadores moleculares acessam o genoma, evitando o efeito ambiental e conseqüentemente erros de identificação. Várias técnicas estão disponíveis e a técnica ISSR vem sendo empregada para a diferenciação rápida entre indivíduos próximos, devido ao elevado grau de polimorfismo, reprodutibilidade e baixo custo. Este trabalho objetivou mensurar o nível de diferenciação genética de linhagens de Trichogramma, mediante o emprego da técnica de ISSR. Cinco linhagens foram estudadas: três da espécie T. pretiosum Riley, uma da espécie T. atopovirilia Oatman & Platner e uma da espécie T. bruni Nagaraja.
