Forest fragmentation and deforestation are subjects of great concern in tropical regions, namely in South America and Africa, contributing to a rapid loss of tropical forest area and with serious implications for ecosystem functioning and biodiversity conservation. Despite the decrease in deforestation rates in recent years, the Brazilian Amazon, with the largest continuous region of tropical forest in the world, has suffered the greatest recorded losses, which have been contributing to continuous habitat fragmentation and a reduction in the territory occupied by Amerindian populations. In an attempt to preserve the remaining habitats and forests, Brazil has been adopting land conservation policies, including the implementation of protected areas. Protected areas (PAs) possess the potential to significantly reduce habitat fragmentation by conserving large, contiguous areas of land. In order to examine how effective PAs are at conserving forest area in the Brazilian Legal Amazon, patterns of deforestation are analyzed and compared, inside and outside the PAs, through landscape metrics calculated using the Patch Analyst and V-LATE extensions of a Geographic Information System. Two different sources (the Hansen Global Forest Change Dataset and the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research's (INPE) PRODES project) of annual forest cover-loss data derived from satellite imagery at medium-to-high spatial and temporal resolutions are compared at two-yearly intervals across 2002-2016. Additionally, fragmentation levels associated with deforestation patterns are assessed through an index modeled using a set of uncorrelated landscape metrics, and the associated change factors and trend are discussed. Results show that there is greater fragmentation in some PAs located in Mato Grosso and Pará States, especially those near the "arc of deforestation", and that Yanomami Indigenous Lands (YIL) are tending towards more fragmentation. Although some PAs are in a critical condition, findings show they all actively contribute to improved conservation of the native ecosystem and, in conjunction with sustainable management policies, will continue to help reduce or avoid forest fragmentation and degradation processes.

The municipality of Sorriso-MT has become the largest grain producer in the country in the last 40 years, which has caused important economic, social and local changes. Thus, we seek to analyze and understand the dynamics of these transformations. We evaluate the growth of agricultural activity in the Municipality, the reduction of areas of natural vegetation and relate the growth of production with aspects of economic and social development. In order to verify the temporal transformations in the landscape, maps of soil occupation were elaborated from satellite images, in a five-year time scale (1985 to 2015). In 2015, 24.97% of the area of the Municipality covered by natural vegetation. Soy is the main crop, present in 68.6% of the area of the Municipality. If, on the one hand, agricultural activities generate taxes that are fundamental to municipal obligations, on the other hand, they also generate relevant socioenvironmental impacts.

IntroduçãoO Estado de Mato Grosso (MT) abarca diversas regiões com características muito especiais, como: o Vale do Araguaia; o Parque Indígena do Xingu, na transição da Amazônia e o Cerrado; as regiões de áreas úmidas do Pantanal, dentre outras regiões distribuídas na Amazônia, no Cerrado e no Pantanal mato-grossense. Entre estes ecossistemas, inúmeros ecótonos demarcam a beleza natural da transição, da sucessão e da permanência da paisagem. Somada ao potencial natural, esta paisagem conta com um mosaico cultural de identidades interatuantes nos territórios, configurando-se como um dos estados brasileiros com maior diversidade sociocultural, evidenciada nas diferentes particularidades de vários povos: indígenas, quilombolas, pequenos agricultores, seringueiros, pescadores artesanais, ribeirinhos, retireiros, dentre outros grupos que se espalham pelo território, revelando a multiplicidade das identidades mato-grossenses. Entretanto, muitos destes grupos sociais ainda estão "invisíveis" ou pouco conhecidos.Considerando que "[...] as pesquisas na dimensão da paisagem requerem a consideração dos atores sociais que agem e interferem em todo o sistema" (SANTOS et al., 2009, p. 4); este artigo vem apresentar o mapeamento dos grupos sociais de MT obtidos pelos depoimentos dos representantes de vários grupos sociais desse estado. Acreditamos ser fundamental mapear e registrar as identidades destes grupos portadores de saberes e práticas ambientais relevantes para os projetos de construção de sociedades sustentáveis. No decorrer do artigo, buscamos 2 Orientadora e Doutora em Ciências com Pós-doutorado em Educação, Docente-convidada do Programa de Pós-graduação em Ecologia e Recursos Resumo: o estado do mato Grosso (Brasil) possui uma rica diversidade ecológica somado ao mosaico cultural de identidades interatuantes nos territórios. Contudo, muitos grupos sociais estão "invisíveis" ou pouco conhecidos. esta pesquisa tem objetivo de mapear e registrar as identidades dos grupos sociais, portadores de saberes e práticas ambientais relevantes para construção de sociedades sustentáveis. neste artigo apresentamos o registro de 42 grupos sociais somados a 45 etnias indígenas totalizando um prognóstico de 87 identidades mato-grossenses. os resultados aqui apresentados vêm contribuir com a proteção ecológica dos ecossistemas e reforçar o reconhecimento das identidades coletivas que defendem diferentes territorialidades e merecem políticas públicas específicas para a autonomia de suas identidades e de seus territórios.Palavras-chave: educação ambiental.
