Seasonal variation on the presence of adenoviruses in stools from non-diarrheic patients

Abstract: Human adenoviruses (HAdV), members of the Adenoviridae family, are excreted through the fecal route and may be present in the feces of humans consuming contaminated food or water. The presence of HAdV from different serotypes in the feces of healthy individuals was already reported using conventional polymerase chain reaction; however, real-time PCR (qPCR) may reveal not only the rates of detection as well as demonstrate the viral loads excreted by healthy persons. Aiming to identify and characterize the prese… Show more

“…This biennial pattern exhibited in rotavirus epidemiology is consistent with previous studies [39,40]. Similarly, adenovirus infection being mostly incidental during the months of July and August specifically (wherein the weather is usually hot due to Summer in Lebanon) has been reported in world literature in previous studies as well [41]. This variability might be owing to weather conditions which affect transmission of the viruses more rapidly.…”

“…RVA and adenovirus appeared to peak in the dry months while norovirus GII and sapovirus peaked in the rainy season. Similar patterns in the seasonality of RVA, adenovirus, norovirus GII and sapovirus have been observed elsewhere [ 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ]. The seasonality of astrovirus is not well described.…”

“…The core virome profiles observed in our work are consistent with previous studies, which detected Herpesviridae, Papillomaviridae, Adenoviridae and Anelloviridae within faecal samples from healthy individuals (Wylie et al ., ; Di Bonito et al ., ; Vetter et al ., ), underscoring the notion that virus interactions with the host cannot be solely envisioned as pathogenic (Virgin, ). We hypothesize that these viruses are found in the faeces mainly as a result of mucosal and epithelial exfoliation.…”
