Seroprevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi in occupationally exposed persons in the Belgrade area, Serbia

Abstract: Lyme disease (LD) is a natural focal zoonotic disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, which is mainly transmitted through infected Ixodes ricinus tick bites. The presence and abundance of ticks in various habitats, the infectivity rate, as well as prolonged human exposure to ticks are factors that may affect the infection risk as well as the incidence of LD. In recent years, 20% to 25% of ticks infected with different borrelial species, as well as about 5,300 citizens with LD, have been registered in the Belgr… Show more

“…The estimated Borrelia IgG seroprevalence ratio was similar to ratios obtained among blood donors in European countries such as Belgium (2·6%, urban blood donors; 2·9%, rural blood donors) (De Keukeleire et al ., ), Romania (4·3%) (Hristea et al ., ), central Italy (4·3%) (Santino et al ., ) and Austria (3·8%) (Pierer et al ., ). However, it was lower compared to other countries such as Serbia (8·6%) (Jovanovic et al ., ) and especially Tanzania, where the anti‐borrelia IgG prevalence was very high (30%) (Mhalu & Matre, ). This variability in the seroprevalence can be the result of different sensitivities of the applied test.…”

“…During the next two decades, 16 borrelia strains were isolated from I. ricinus ticks in different studies; all were characterized either as B. burgdorferi s.s. or B. afzelii by molecular methods (Jovičić et al 2003;Ristanović et al 2007;Čekanac et al 2010;Potkonjak et al 2014). The available data on the epidemiology and clinical manifestation of LB in Serbia are scarce and mainly based on seroprevalence surveys (Savić et al 2010;Jovanović et al 2015).…”
