Comparison of thermotolerant coliforms and Escherichia coli densities in freshwater bodies

Abstract: Fecal bacterial indicator analyses have been widely used for monitoring the water quality. This study was designed to determine the ratio between the density of Escherichia coli and other Thermotolerant Coliforms (TtC) bacteria from freshwater samples collected for a two-year period of monitoring. TtC were enumerated by membrane filtration on mFC agar. E. coli enumeration was done by two methods: TtC colonies identified in mFC were inoculated in EC-MUG or water samples were filtered and inoculated in modified … Show more

“…Nowadays, the faecal coliforms (FC) and faecal streptococci (FS) are important common indicator microorganisms used in water quality studies. Faecal coliforms consist of more than 60% of total coliforms, and more than 90% of the faecal coliforms are members of the genus Escherichia (Hachich et al, ). It is well known that E. coli is the most prevalent coliform bacterium.…”

“…Various external physical and chemical factors such as UV Sobsey, 2011 andNuanualsuwan et al, 2008) temperature, storage temperature and time (Soliman et al, 2013), solvents (Zaritsky et al, 1979and Rabbani et al, 2004 and pH (Maillard et al, 1994), the occurrence, viability and infectivity of coliphages (Hachich et al, 2012 andZaritsky et al, 1979). Protein coat and/or appendages besides lipid loss, and/or DNA structural changes are targets of external factors (Kamolsiripichaiporn et al, 2007 andSoliman et al, 2013).…”

“…However, although thermotolerant coliforms are associated with impacts of human activities on water quality (NIEWEGLOWSKI, 2006), they do not necessarily indicate faecal contamination. Therefore, the adoption of more accurate indicators, such as Escherichia coli, may contribute to the more effective monitoring of the water bodies (HACHICH et al, 2012). In this case, the frequency curves would be even more representative from the point of view of fecal contribution if they considered Escherichia coli.…”
