In vitro activity of Origanum vulgare essential oil against Candida species

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro activity of the essential oil extracted from Origanum vulgare against sixteen Candida species isolates. Standard strains tested comprised C. albicans (ATCC strains 44858, 4053, 18804 and 3691), C. parapsilosis (ATCC 22019), C. krusei (ATCC 34135), C. lusitaniae (ATCC 34449) and C. dubliniensis (ATCC MY646). Six Candida albicans isolates from the vaginal mucous membrane of female dogs, one isolate from the cutaneous tegument of a dog and one isolate of a capuch… Show more

“…Research concerning the antifungal effect of O. vulgare EO by Cleff et al . () showed results that are comparable to the results of this study in terms of the antifungal effect of oregano EO. The MIC/MFC concentrations of their tested EO ranged from 1·2 to 10 μ l ml −1 , which is in accordance with the MIC/MFC values of analysed oregano EO that ranged from 2·2 to 4·5 μ l ml −1 .…”

“…Only clinical isolates from vaginal mucosal membrane were used in our study, and they showed a similar pattern of resistance to oregano EO as the isolates that were investigated in similar research, among which the most resistant strains were isolates from animal mucosal membranes in comparison with skin and reference ATCC strains (Cleff et al . ).…”

“…Among the natural products with potential to be used as growth promoters is oregano, Origanum sp. (Fukayama et al ), because of its antibacterial (Sivropoulou et al ; Burt and Reinders ; Souza et al ; Oliveira et al ), antifungal (Sartoratto et al ; Cleff et al ), antioxidant (Simitzis et al ; Zheng et al ), anti‐inflammatory (Azuma et al ; Ocaña‐Fuentes et al ), antihelminthic (Force et al ) and digestive properties (Hernández et al ; Platel and Srinivasan ). These properties are attributed to the presence of phenolic carvacrol and thymol and monoterpenes γ‐terpinene and ρ‐cymene (Bampidis et al ; Zheng et al ), among others.…”

“…Nesse contexto, extratos vegetais com ação in vitro antimicrobiana comprovada, se destacando o óleo essencial do orégano (Origanum vulgare), já demonstraram ação antifúngica frente a espécies de Candida (CLEFF et al, 2010a) e Malassezia pachydermatis (PRESTES et al, 2008). A boa atividade in vitro frente a espécies do complexo Sporothrix schenckii também foi avaliada em diferentes estudos (CLEFF et al, 2010b;WALLER et al, 2016a;WALLER et al, 2016b;WALLER et al, 2017a;WALLER et al, 2018).…”
