Culture Conditions stimulating high γ-Linolenic Acid accumulation by Spirulina platensis

Abstract: Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) production by Spirulina platensis under different stress-inducing conditions was studied. Submerged culture studies showed that low temperature (25ºC), strong light intensity (6 klux) and primrose oil supplement (0.8%w/v) induced 13.2 mg/g, 14.6 mg/g and 13.5 mg linolenic acid per gram dry cell weight respectively. A careful observation of fatty acid profile of the cyanobacteria shows that, oleic acid and linoleic acid, in experiments with varying growth temperature and oil supplemen… Show more

“…These metabolites attenuate inflammatory and proliferative processes (Ziboh, ). In Arthrospira , C18:3 n‐6 appears to be associated with photosynthesis, as it is located in the galactosyl diglycerides of the chloroplasts (Nichols & Wood, ) and its concentration is affected by the light regime (Ronda & Lele, ).…”

“…However, it is important to note that GLA, AA, and also eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA-C20:5 x3) are essential fatty acid precursors of prostaglandin E1, a major active biological compound required to reduce inflammation and blood pressure. 23 This microalga is thus important from the standpoint of metabolic supplementation.…”
