Viral Hepatitis C in a leading Brazilian hospital: epidemiological factors and genotyping

Abstract: The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is classified into six different genotypes and their distribution is different throughout the world. Epidemiologic studies are important to determine several characteristics of the virus, as well as the disease. This study analysed the prevalence of HCV and its genotypes among patients from a leading hospital in Ceará, which is located in Northeast Brazil. A total of 119 anti-HCV-seropositive patients, each having previously completed a questionnaire about risk behaviours related to… Show more

“…e HCV-RNA percentage in HCV antibody-positive patients in our community was 61.1% (124/203). Similar disparities in ratio between HCV antibody-positive and HCV-RNA viral load detectable plasma levels have been reported by others (10,11).…”

“…Another important nding of this study is that older patients (>50 years) su ered signi cantly more from HCV-RNA viral load than younger (<50) ones, which is dissimilar to studies conducted in Brazil and the USA (10,12). e reasons for this could be mainly because older patients had a greater probability of undergoing blood transfusions and surgery before 1993.…”

“…Outros métodos de genotipagem são baseados em técnicas sorológicas e moleculares. A reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) com métodos de genotipagem incluem o uso de primers para amplificação, análise de hibridização reversa, usando sondas específicas para uma região do VHC e por análises da técnica de restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) 5 .…”
