Micropropagation of Salvia guaranitica Benth. through axillary shoot proliferation

Abstract: Nodal segments from greenhouse grown adult plants of Salvia guaranitica were used to evaluate the effect of culture media and growth regulators on the micropropagation and growth. The highest multiplication rate was obtained on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 2.22 µM of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). The best condition for rooting was MS medium with 2.85 µM indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Rooted plants were successfully acclimatized and exhibited a normal development until maturity. Using the describ… Show more

“…BAP was the most effective cytokinin for the multiplication of shoots in C. collinus. This result was in accordance with the findings of Portulaca grandiflora (Jain and Bashir, 2010), Thymus satureioides (Aicha et al, 2013) and Salvia guaranitica (Echeverrigaray et al, 2010). On the other hand when the cytokinin level was increased there was a reduction and stunted shoots.…”

“…Earlier reports showed the efficiency of BAP in production of multiple shoots on Portulaca grandiflora [44], Thymus satureioides [45], Origanum sipyleum [46], and Salvia guaranitica [47]. However, increased concentration of BAP and KIN beyond the optimum level resulted in the reduction of shoot per explants.…”

“…This choice was not accidental, as it has been found that cytokinins possessing a heterocyclic system in their structure gave better results in the multiplication of Salvia species. Media containing 0.5 mg/L benzylaminopurine, were found to yield a multiplication atio for Salvia guaranitica 2.5 times that of a culture treated with the same TDZ (thidiazuron) content [8]. BAP was also more effective than thidiazuron in the proliferation of Salvia brachyodon [9], Salvia nemorosa [10], and Salvia fruticosa [11].…”
