Isaria fumosorosea and Isaria farinosa are important entomopathogenic fungi with a worldwide distribution and multiple host insects. However, the concerns about the safety risks of myco-pesticides have been attracting the attention of researchers and consumers. Secondary metabolites (SMs), especially the mycotoxins, closely affect the biosafety of Isaria myco-insecticides. In the last forty years, more than seventy SMs were identified and isolated from I. fumosorosea and I. farinose. The SMs of I. fumosorosea include the mycotoxins of non-ribosomal peptides (NRPs) (beauvericin and beauverolides), terpenes (trichocaranes and fumosorinone), lactone compounds (cepharosporolides), acids (dipicolinic acid and oxalic acid), etc. Meanwhile, the NRP mycotoxins (cycloaspeptides) and the terpene compounds (farinosones and militarinones) are the main SMs in I. farinosa. Although several researches reported the two Isaria have promised biosafety, the bioactivities and the safety risks of their SMs have not been studied in detail so far. However, based on existing knowledge, most SMs (i.e., mycotoxins) do not come from Isaria myco-insecticide itself, but are from the host insects infected by Isaria fungi, because only the hosts can provide the conditions for fungal proliferation. Furthermore, the SMs from Isaria fungi have a very limited possibility of entering into environments because many SMs are decomposed in insect cadavers. The biosafety of Isaria myco-insecticides and their SMs/mycotoxins are being monitored. Of course, SMs safety risks of Isaria myco-insecticides need further research.

Comparing application methods of entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana to control Cylas formicarius (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Cylas formicarius is a major pest of sweet potatoes. The tuber damage caused by C. formicarius reaches 100%. The research objective was to compare application methods of entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana to control C. formicarius. The research was conducted at the entomology screen house of Indonesian Legume and Tuber Crops Research Institute (ILETRI) at Malang, East Java, from January to September 2013. The treatment consisted of 12 application methods, each was repeated three times. The results showed that application of B. bassiana into the planting pit, soaking the sweet potato cuttings into the conidial suspension of B. bassiana for 30 minutes before planting, followed by spray application with two week interval (2 to 12 weeks after planting, WAP) or P4 was effective in suppressing C. formicarius population and tuber damage. Tuber weight obtained from P4 treatment was 1.4 kg plant -1 , while from the chemical insecticide was only 1.1 kg plant -1 . Tuber damage from P4 treatment was lower ( 5%) than that from chemical insecticide treatment (42%). Therefore, application of B. bassiana conidial suspension in the planting pit, continued by soaking the sweet potato cuttinginto the B. bassiana conidial suspension for 30 minutes before planting, and followed by spray applications of B. bassiana conidial suspension at two-week intervals ( 2-12 WAP) or P4 method can be recommended to control C. formicarius.Key words: adult, egg, larvae, tuber damage, tuber weight ABSTRAKPerbandingan metode aplikasi jamur entomopatogen Beauveria bassiana untuk pengendalian Cylas formicarius (Coleoptera:Ccurculionidae). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membandingkan metode aplikasi jamur entomopatogen, Beauveria bassiana dalam mengendalikan C. formicarius. Penelitian dilakukan di rumah kasa entomologi, Balai Penelitian Tanaman Aneka Kacang dan Umbi (BALITKABI), Malang pada bulan Januari sampai dengan September 2013. Perlakuan terdiri atas 12 metode aplikasi, masing-masing perlakuan diulang tiga kali. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa aplikasi konidia B. bassiana ke dalam lubang tanam, perendaman stek ke dalam suspensi konidia jamur B. bassiana selama 30 menit sebelum tanam, dilanjutkan aplikasi semprot dengan interval dua minggu mulai umur 2 sampai dengan 12 minggu setelah tanam (MST) (P4) efektif menekan populasi C. formicarius dan kerusakan umbi. Berat umbi perlakuan P4 mencapai 1,4 kg tanaman -1 , sedangkan perlakuan aplikasi insektisida kimia hanya 1,1 kg tanaman -1 . Kerusakan umbi perlakuan P4 hanya 5%, sedangkan kerusakan umbi pada aplikasi insektisida kimia mencapai 42%. ABSTRAKCylas formicarius (Fabricus) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) merupakan hama utama ubi jalar yang menyebabkan kehilangan hasil hingga mencapai 100%. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan teknik pengendalian C. formicarius yang efektif dan efisien. Penelitian dilaksanakan bulan JuniOktober 2014 di kebun percobaan Muneng, Probolinggo, Jawa Timur, menggunakan rancangan acak kelompok, lima perlakuan diulang tiga kali. Perlakuannya adalah perendaman stek ubi jalar dalam suspensi konidia Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. selama 30 menit sebelum tanam; aplikasi suspensi konidia B. bassiana ke tanah pada umur 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, dan 12 minggu setelah tanam; stek direndam suspensi konidia B. bassiana selama 30 menit sebelum tanam dilanjutkan aplikasi suspensi konidia B. bassiana ke tanah pada umur 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, dan 12 MST; aplikasi insektisida interval 1 minggu, kontrol. Hasil analisis ragam menunjukkan bahwa aplikasi berbagai jenis teknik pengendalian berpengaruh nyata terhadap populasi larva dan imago C. formicarius serta tingkat kerusakan umbi. Populasi C. formicarius pada umbi dari seluruh perlakuan berkisar antara 1-4 telur/tanaman, 1-19 larva/tanaman, 0-0,2 pupa/tanaman, dan 0-4 imago/tanaman. Bobot umbi per tanaman berkisar antara 571-700 g dan tingkat kerusakan umbi berkisar antara 5,83-53,33%. Tingkat kerusakan umbi yang terendah terdapat pada perlakuan aplikasi suspensi konidia B. bassiana ke tanah atau pangkal batang ubi jalar pada umur 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, dan 12 MST, yaitu hanya 6%. Aplikasi suspensi konidia B. bassiana pada permukaan tanah atau pangkal batang ubi jalar pada umur 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, dan 12 MST berhasil menekan populasi C. formicarius pada umbi dan mengurangi kerusakan umbi ubi jalar hingga 48%.
