RESUMO -Este trabalho teve por objetivo analisar o efeito da perda dos cotilédones em diferentes épocas do crescimento inicial do feijoeiro. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial de 2x5, plântulas com zero e um cotilédone, interagindo com cinco épocas de extrações: zero, um, dois, quatro e seis dias após a germinação, com cinco repetições compostas por três plântulas. Após os 15 dias foram avaliados os seguintes parâmetros: comprimento médio de raiz e parte aérea; diâmetro médio do caule; área foliar; massa seca total da parte aérea e raiz; diâmetro do fl oema e xilema; espessura da epiderme abaxial e adaxial. A remoção dos cotilédones no desenvolvimento inicial do feijoeiro infl uência todos os parâmetros avaliados neste trabalho, exceto o diâmetro médio do caule com um cotilédone. A remoção dos cotilédones nos primeiros dias de extrações difi culta o desenvolvimento inicial do feijoeiro, assim como o torna mais suscetível ao meio. The objective of this work was to analyze the eff ect of cotyledon loss at diff erent times of initial bean growth. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial scheme of 2x5, seedlings with zero and one cotyledon, interacting with fi ve extraction stages: zero, one, two, four, and six days after germination, with fi ve replicates composed of three seedlings. After 15 days, the following parameters were evaluated: mean root and shoot length; mean stem diameter; leaf area; total shoot and root dry mass; phloem and xylem diameter; and thickness of abaxial and adaxial epidermis. Removing cotyledons during the initial development of the bean plant infl uenced all the parameters evaluated in this work, except the mean diameter of the stem with one cotyledon. The removal of cotyledons in the fi rst days of extractions hinders the initial development of the plant, as well as making it more susceptible to the environment. Considering that the root structure of the Brazilian genera belonging to the Catasetinae subtribe is poorly known, we describe the roots of twelve representatives from this subtribe. For anatomical analysis, the roots were fixed in FAA 50, preserved in ethanol 70% and sectioned at its medium region using razor blades. The sections were stained with 0.05% astra blue and safranin and mounted in glycerin. For the identification of starch we used Lugol´s solution; for lignin, floroglucin chloridric; for lipids, Sudan III, and for flavanoids, potassium hydroxide. The relevant aspects were registered using a digital camera joined with an Olympus microspope (BX51 model). The structural similarities of all roots support the placement of the subtribe Catasetinae into the monophyletic tribe Cymbidieae. Some root features are restricted to one or two taxa and can be useful in the systematics of the subtribe. For example, the occurrence of flavonoidic crystals characterizes the genera Catasetum and Cychnodes, and the number of the velamen layers and the shape of the epivelamen cells are useful to confirm the taxonomic position of Clowesia amazonica. The presence of velamen and flavonoidic crystals was interpreted as an adaptation to the epiphytic habit.

Leaf morphoanatomy of the medicinal Maytenus imbricata (Celastraceae): an ecological approach

Background: The leaves of many species of Maytenus are used to prepare herbal drugs to treat stomach ulcers. Questions: In order to define key anatomical characters for the unambiguous species identification, the present study aimed to describe the leaf morphoanatomy of M. imbricata. Species study: Maytenus imbricata Mart. ex Reissek (Celastraceae) Study site and dates: Collected in an area of 'campo rupestre' -one of the Brazilian Savannah vegetation (20º 22' 11.02" S, 43º 30' 22.81" W) in August 2015. Methods: The plant material was processed according to commonly used techniques in plant anatomy studies. Results: The major anatomical characters for several species of Maytenus identification also present in M. imbricata are marginal teeth, conspicuous epicuticular wax, ciclocytic stomata, thick external periclinal wall with large pits on epidermal cells and vascular system with a closed loop shape in cross-section. Strips on the anticlinal walls on epidermal cells and conspicuous gelatinous fibers sheath are diagnostic for M. imbricata. Conclusions: Strips on the anticlinal wall of the epidermal cell are reported for the first time for the genus. The xeromorphic traits help the species to survive in arid environments and may contribute to quality control of the raw material used in the production of herbal medicines. ResumenAntecedentes: Las hojas de muchas especies de Maytenus se utilizan para la preparación de medicamentos para el tratamiento de las úlceras de estómago. Preguntas: Con la finalidad de contribuir a la identificación de la especie, este estudio tuvo como objetivo describir la morfología y anatomia de la hoja de M. imbricata. Especie de estudio: Maytenus imbricata Mart. ex Reissek (Celastraceae) Sitio y años de estudio: Recolecta de material en una zona de 'campo rupestre' -vegetación del cerrado brasileño (20º 22' 11.02" S, 43º 30' 22.81" W) en agosto del 2015. Métodos: El material vegetal se procesó mediante las técnicas que se utilizan en los estudios de anatomía vegetal. Resultados: Los principales caracteres anatómicos para la identificación de varias especies de Maytenus, que están presentes en M. imbricata, son los dientes marginales, la cera epicuticular gruesa, los estomas ciclocíticos, las células epidérmicas con la pared periclinal externa gruesa, con grandes punteaduras y la sección transversal del sistema vascular en un círculo cerrado. Las estrías en las paredes anticlinales y las fibras gelatinosas son caracteres diagnósticos para M. imbricata. Conclusiones: Las estrías que se forman en la pared de las células epidérmicas se reportan por primera vez en el género. Estos caracteres xeromórficos ayudan a la especie a sobrevivir en ambientes áridos y pueden contribuir al control de la calidad de la materia prima utilizada en la producción de medicamentos.
